The Sentence of Death

By Allen Domelle, Old Paths Journal

2 Corinthians 1:9

“But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead:”

In prisons around the world are many people who have been sentenced to death for crimes they have committed. If we were to discuss the crimes these people committed, we would find that many of them committed atrocious and despicable crimes that many feel warrants the death sentence. As these people sit in their prison cells, there must be no hope for their lives. They don’t have the hope of getting out. They have no hope of a bright future. The only thing they have is today, and today for many of these inmates is another twenty-something hours sitting in a cell awaiting the date that they will be executed.

However, I find many people have sentenced themselves to death. No, they have not committed any crime that warrants a death sentence. In fact, they could get out of this death sentence with one action. What is the crime that these people committed that causes them to sentence themselves to death? The crime is that they are trusting themselves instead of trusting God. The verse above says, “But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God…” Sadly, many are living a hopeless life because they are trusting themselves to get through their problems instead of trusting God. Let me share a few thoughts about this death sentence.

First, trusting yourself is a dead-end street. I was sitting in my office counseling an individual who seemed to have all the answers, and yet they still didn’t have the answer to their problem. They rejected God’s Word, yet they wondered why their life was a mess. It was a mess because they were trusting themselves. You will keep hitting the wall in life the longer you continue to trust yourself instead of God. You are looking for answers in life, but you will never find the answers by trusting yourself. The only thing you have done by trusting yourself is to sentence yourself to death.

Second, the only reason you are trusting yourself is because you want to control everything in your life. Let me put this simply; stop being a control freak. Too many people want to control their own lives when they don’t even know what the next hour holds. Let me ask you, what does your tomorrow hold? Many people think they know what their tomorrow holds, but what they think their tomorrow holds is at best an assumption. One of the biggest reasons you struggle with trusting God is because you want to control your life. You are having problems with taking your hands off the steering wheel of life and trusting God to take you where He knows is best for you. The longer you try to grab life’s steering wheel from God, the longer you will find yourself facing the sentence of death.

Third, you can negate your life sentence by simply trusting God. Trusting God means that you don’t know everything. Trusting God means that you don’t know what your tomorrow holds, and it reveals your inability to get through your situations by yourself. My friend, what do you have to lose by trusting the God who knows what your tomorrow holds? What do you have to lose by trusting the God who knows the next step that you will take? You will find the sentence of death in your life will be replaced with a bright hope and confidence that everything will be okay when you take your hands off life’s steering wheel and start trusting God.
