The Russian Five to make U.S. television debut tonight

By Joseph Hayes

A production of two of the Blue Water Area’s own will be featured on NBC Sports Network tonight after Detroit Red Wings hockey.

After the Wings face the New York Rangers, the documentary The Russian Five will premiere on U.S. television at 11 p. m. on NBC Sports Network.

The sports documentary, The Russian Five produced by Steve Bannatyne and directed by Joshua Riehl of Port Huron tells the story of how Slava Kozlov, Sergei Fedorov, Slava Fetisov, Vladimir Konstatinov and Igor Larionov helped lead the Red Wings to back-to-back Stanley Cup championships.

The film goes in-depth to explore the Red Wings plan to draft the best Soviet-era players and help them defect to Detroit. Under coach Scotty Bowman, the Red Wings would go on to win the Stanley Cup in the 1996-97 and 1997-98 seasons.

Check out the documentary tonight and leave your comments on what you thought about a film that has already begun to captivate audiences around the world.
