The Bible According to Gump: A Second Chance

By Michael L. Ritchie D.C.

Lt. Dan and Forrest were at Times Square and two of Dan’s Lady friends show up.

Lenore leans over and whispers in Forrest’s ear: Don’t you just love New Years? You get to start all over again.

Everyone gets a second chance.

Thank God for second chances, even though often we don’t take advantage of them. Every 24 hours we have a new opportunity to start all over again.  Some days, everything seems to be going right and we don’t want the day to end. On other days, things are going so badly we can’t wait for the clock to strike midnight.  God has set up the times and seasons. In his Divine wisdom, he knew that the length of days, the duration of seasons and the years of our lives could be challenging. When Adam and Eve sinned the garden because God was merciful, he drove them out of the garden and posted a guard in front of the tree of life. Why? Because God didn’t want them to live forever in their sinful nature. He knew that he would provide them a second chance to fellowship with Him again without sin coming between them.

Sampson was chosen by God to be the old testament “Super Man.” God’s account of his life is documented in the book of Judges 13-16. Samson blew his chances to follow God’s plan for his life by letting his carnal nature get the best of him.

Jonah was a prophet of God who was told to preach to the evil people of Nineveh. He ran the other way.

King David was chosen by God to lead God’s people as king, but one lazy spring he was distracted, got off track, committed adultery and murder.

In spite of their wrongdoings, all these people were given a second chance and God blessed them.

The God of the Bible is the God of second chances.

In “Forrest Gump” Jennie had a second chance with Forrest and LT. Dan had a second chance at a sober, productive life.

Just as Forrest’s mother said, “Death is just another part of life.” So one day, our second chances will end.  The troubling issue is we never know when that very last chance will be.  Today could be our last chance to watch “Forrest Gump”, to kiss our wife or husband, to say we are sorry for hurting someone. It could be the last chance to do something on our bucket list or finish a project we were trying to finish. More importantly, it might be the last chance to get right with God. Like Forrest with Jenny, God waits for us to “come home.”

He makes all things New – A New Year’s Prayer

Lord, you said You make all things new could you start with me today?
A sinful man is waiting here, have your will and way

I have tried to change, the truth there’s no escaping…
What’s needed for the old man is not fixing but replacing

Maybe start with my mind Lord, I need a new thought life
Help me to think on what is beautiful not all the wrong and strife

Then change my eyes to look upon only what pleases You
Help me to see my brother just the way You do

The issue next is my darkened heart, I need one that is clean
Compassion for my fellow man so Your goodness can be seen

Let my feet walk in your will, my hands show loving care
May my arms be for embracing so others know You’re there

Satisfy my hunger with more than daily bread
May I thirst and hunger after righteousness instead

Enable my lips be slow to speak, be quick to give You praise
So my words will encourage others, ministers of your grace

Touch my ears so they can hear the beauty of Your Word
Help me be obedient, to do not just be heard

And even though it is the smallest thing my tongue can start a fire
Control it Lord, make me a perfect man, once a murderous liar

Make it so when others look, they see the glory of Your grace
Form me in your image until at last I see Your face

Lord, you said You make all things new could you start with me today?
A sinful man is waiting here, have Your will I pray

2 Cor. 5:17

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! NIV

Our second chance comes by realizing we are sinners and believe that Jesus can save us.
