St Clair Kennel Club Holds Annual Dog Shows

St Clair Kennel Club held its annual dog shows September 16th through September 18th.  Each day, approximately 658 dogs in 130 breeds and varieties competed in the championship shows licensed by the American Kennel Club.  The entry included 58 obedience entries and 47 Rally entries.

Exhibitors traveled from several states as far away as Washington and began arriving Thursday, September 15th; many coming in motor homes and RV’s to get ready for the competition.  Grooming areas were set up under tents. There were dogs of every conceivable size and shape. Spectators were free to roam the grounds and watch the competition in the nine rings.  Those interested in particular breeds had the opportunity to speak with the breeders, or just enjoy the beauty of the dogs at the show. 

The weekend began Friday, September 16th with the Great Lakes Toy Specialty, judged by Mr. Darryl Vice, after the Best of Breed winners was chosen by their respective judges.  Mr. Vice chose Grand Champion Sleepyhollow Meet IBM, a Brussels Griffon, owned Jaye Schultz and Mary Tichenor of Warsaw, Indiana.  The Griffon was handled by Mr. Nick Waters.  Second place was awarded to the Pomeranian, third place awarded to the Yorkshire Terrier, and 4th place to the Japanese Chin.  The second place Pomeranian, Grand Champion Allstar Poms Boy’s Dream Come True was also award Best in Specialty at the Pomeranian Club of Michigan, held on Saturday. The dog is owned by Kodchappong Leeraphante of N. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

On Saturday, the first of two Championship All Breed Shows were held.  The breeds are divided into seven groups, Sporting, Hounds, Working Terriers, Toys, Non-Sporting, and Herding.  Each breed competition was divided by sex with one winners dog (male) and one winners bitch awarded points toward their championship.  They then competed with the champions for Best of Breed.  The winner in each breed and variety chosen Best of Breed went on to compete in their group.

The winners in each group were:

Sporting – English Springer Spaniel, GCHG CH WIL-ORION’S IF WISHES CAME TRUE, Owned by Judy Vanderlip & Liz Pike & Susan Hatch & Janice Johnson & Beth Fink, Woodbridge, CA 

Hounds – Pharaoh Hound, GCH HALLAM BAKHU’S LEX IS DANCING AT GIZA AL MIA, Owned by   Kendra Williams, Perrysburg, OH

Working – Newfoundland, GCHS CH TOP SHELF’S THEY CALL THEM THE DIAMOND DOGS, Owned by Carrie Keech & Becky Reynnells & Joel & Mary Rich, Fenton, MI

Terrier – Welch Terrier, CH BRYNMAWR SWEET TEA AND CORNBREAD BCAT, owned by Shelley Hudson, Ada, MI 

Toys – Japanese Chin, GCHB GCH TWO OAKS SOUTHERN COMFORT @ SONSETS, owned by Jean Welsh & Rod Welsh & Roxanne Aldridge, Delaware, OH 

Non-Sporting – Bichons Frises, GCHP CH ENCORES ONCE UPON A DREAM, owed by Neena Pellegrini & Stephanie Toom, Tacoma, WA 

Herding – Smooth Collie –CH WILD WIND’S SENT FROM HEAVEN TO 5C’S, owned by Keileigh K Orndorff, Williamston, MI 

Best in Show was awarded by Judge, Robert Frost to the English Springer Spaniel.

An Obedience Trial an Rally were also held.

On Sunday another championship show gave all exhibitors a second chance for points, Group Competition and of course, the top award Best in Show. 

Each year St. Clair Kennel Club hosts these All Breed Shows at the St. Clair County Fairgrounds.  Some of the most beautiful dogs in the country come every year to compete.  If you are a dog lover and missed the shows this year, don’t forget to attend them next year!  You might find yourself bitten by the dog show bug!
