“And when the seventh month was come, and the children of Israel were in the cities, the people gathered themselves together as one man to Jerusalem.”
The secret as to why the remnant was able to accomplish rebuilding the temple is found in one phrase in the verse above. The secret is in the phrase, “…the people gathered themselves together as one man…” I’m sure that each of these people had their own opinions, but they laid aside their opinions for something greater. There is no doubt that these people had their differences with each other, but they laid aside their differences for the sake of accomplishing something greater. I’m sure these people had personal dreams and desires that they wanted for themselves, but they laid them aside for something greater than their own dreams and desires. The secret to them being gathered together as one man was that the cause for rebuilding the temple was greater than any of their own personal whims and desires.
My friend, nothing great will ever be done for God until every believer lays aside their own agenda, desires and personal whims for the greater cause. That greater cause is found in Mark 8:35 which says, “For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s, the same shall save it.” One of the main reasons many churches struggle is because of people who make everything about themselves instead of seeing the greater cause of reaching the lost for Christ. If every believer got focused on the greater cause of reaching the lost in their area, they would be able to work with each other in their church to see the lost saved.

If you are not willing to lay aside your differences for the greater cause, you will continue to hurt your church’s ability to reach the lost for Christ. I think of Mary, the mother of Jesus, who was willing to lay aside her hurt that Peter caused by denying her son at the heathen’s fire and pray together with Peter in the upper room for the Holy Spirit’s power. The greater cause was more important to Mary than it was to see Peter destroyed for not standing with Christ. If every believer stayed focused on the greater cause of reaching the lost, their differences with others would seem inconsequential and petty. The way you work with others with whom you have differences is to stay focused on the greater cause.
Moreover, your personal whims and dreams of life would seem so small if you got focused on the greater cause of reaching the lost. Those whom God has used the greatest throughout history were able to see the cause of reaching the lost as a greater cause to give themselves towards than their own personal dreams and desires. There is nothing wrong with making money, but the greater cause of reaching the lost makes the desire for wealth seem so small. It was David who laid aside his fears when he saws the greater cause of God’s name being defied. You will be surprised how your fears, dreams, and desires will fade away when you see God’s cause of reaching the world as the greater cause.
Furthermore, you will find your opinions won’t really matter when you are focused on the greater cause. Opinions and preferences have destroyed many churches, but those who are focused on the greater cause are willing not to have their way so that the cause of Christ can be accomplished. Do you want to be a part of something greater? The only way that will happen is if you get focused on the greater cause of reaching the lost for Christ.
