In January of 2022, Sanilac County Historical Society (SCHS) succeeded in raising $75k to save the Bark Shanty/Aitkin House, a historical home beside the Port Sanilac Lighthouse. Built in 1853, it is one of the first homes ever built in Port Sanilac and one of the oldest homes still standing. Since then, SCHS has accomplished several milestones: moving the home to the village grounds; laying the structure on a new foundation; repairing construction scars from the move; and running utilities lines to the building.

[Through support by financial contributions], “we’re able to in real time live out our mission statement, to preserve, protect and promote history in Sanilac County,” former Administrator of Sanilac County Historic Village & Museum, Dawn Malek.

GivingTuesday was launched in 2012 as a simple idea: to create a day that encourages people to do good. Over the past eleven years, this idea has grown into a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity. People demonstrate generosity in many ways on GivingTuesday.

“GivingTuesday inspires people all around the world to embrace their power to drive progress around the causes they care about, not just on one day but throughout the year,” said Asha Curran, GivingTuesday’s Chief Executive Officer.
