Polar Express PJ Party this Saturday

The colder temperatures are likely bringing children indoors and if they are starting to go stir crazy a night of fun activities at the local Salvation Army might be perfect.

This Saturday, Nov. 19 from 6 to 10 p.m. there will be a Polar Express Pajama Party for children ages 5 to 13. Attendees are encouraged to wear their pjs and enjoy dinner (this month it’s pizza) and a movie plus crafts and games. The cost is $20 for first child and $10 for second sibling. Participants can also bring along a non-perishable food item to donated and be entered into a drawing for a prize. Parents can call in to register their child or walk-in the night of and be welcomed as long as there’s space.

Port Huron Salvation Army Community Center Director Angie Drum said the first Kids Night Out was hosted in September and there was also one in October. The activity will be a monthly event, held on the third Saturday, going forward. She said the idea is to offer more activities for children in the community.

“We also want to offer something to give parents a break,” Drum said, noting that the upcoming event can free adults up for Thanksgiving Day preparations or Christmas shopping.

A recent PJ Party at the community center was very well attended.

The first two nights out welcomed more than 20 children each time and the center can accommodate 40.

Organizers plan a theme for each monthly event. Drum said for example in October there was a Halloween theme complete with appropriate crafts and the movie was “Hocus Pocus.”

The December Kids Night Out will of course have a holiday theme and the movie will be “Elf.”

The menu will depict the one made famous by actor Will Ferrell in the film, where his character ‘Buddy’ the Elf loves spaghetti including putting maple syrup on it.

“We’ll have spaghetti and maple syrup too if they want but I won’t be using any of that,” laughed Drum.

Kids will also enjoy the craft where they will be able to “elf themselves” and take photos, Drum added.

Those who attend these Kids Night Out events aren’t required to remain at the center for the entire four hours, in fact many of the younger ones are picked up by 9 p.m. according to Drum.

Proceeds from the registration fees go to ensure enough staffers on site for the event plus covers the cost for the food and crafts. Drum said this is not a fundraiser for the Salvation Army.

As an additional bit of information for parents a flyer outlining the event states: Staff are trained in CPR, First Aid, Safe from Harm, and have all passed a background check and worked at our summer camp.
