Prowlers vs Columbus Riverdragons, Nov. 18

By David Dell

COLUMBUS Georgia- In the Federal Prospects Hockey League’s 48th game of the season, Port Huron Prowler Head Coach/Player Matt Graham played in his 300th professional hockey game.  It wasn’t a night of celebration for him or the Prowlers though, losing a 5-2 match down in the Chattahoochie Valley.

At 4:14 of the first frame, Paul Fregeau would put the Riverdragons on the board followed only 24 seconds later by a tally put up by former Prowler Edgar Ozolinsh, assisted by another former Cat, Austin Daae.   Port Huron’s Geno Mini and Columbus’s Alex Storjohann would each take minor penalties for Slashing and Cross-checking shortly thereafter.

The Prowlers were the only ones to get Shots on Goal for the next 4-1/2 minute with six different players getting seven shots.  On the Riverdragon’s next offensive rush Josh Pietrantonio would pick up their third goal again from Daae.  The period was just half-over. It was a strange event in which Pietrantonio initially missed high but the puck rebounded right in front of the goal for the second try.

Port Huron got four chances on the powerplay for a Kirk Underwood Goalie Interference minor penalty but were unable to find twine.  Jacob Kelly assisted by Cody Rogers and Jay Croop would get the home team’s fourth goal with just under three minutes left at 17:53. This goal was even strength.

Alex Stojohann would net Columbus’s fifth unanswered goal lifting a pass from Jacob Kelly just over the top of Port Huron’s Wyatt Hoflin’s glove with only 1 second remaining in the first period.

Danick Rodrigue would relieve Hoflin in the second period and managed to halt the carnage, stopping all 16 shots he faced.  Port Huron would get 14 shots and a pair of powerplay opportunities but failed to convert in 20 minutes of play.

The Prowlers managed to draw a bit of blood of their own in the third, on even strength goals from Dalton Jay (5th of the season, assisted by Vincent Dekumbis and Evan Foley) and Sam Marit (1st of the season) doing in all alone.  Marit picked up a fumbled pass to the left of Riverdragon goalie Bailey MacBurnie who in a rage after giving up the goal, broke his stick over the crossbar.  Alex Stojohan took a beating from Matt Graham and Port Huron’s Captain Dustin Henning didn’t let his status as the league’s oldest player from mixing it up with Paul Fregeau.  The Prowlers pulled their goalie Rodrigue for the extra attacker at 19:51 when the Riverdragons drew a pair of separate minor penalties for Slashing (Pietrantonio) and Hooking (Ryan Gil) giving the visitors a 6 on 3 advantage.  MacBurnie and his defense stood tall allowing only two shots to end the game.

Port Huron outshot Columbus 43-28, and failed to take advantage on 13 powerplays.  The Prowlers will play the Riverdragons again Saturday night at the Columbus Civic Center.
