Port Sanilac Fire Dept. urging community to be safe after Sunday lake rescue

Following a lake rescue Sunday afternoon, the Port Sanilac Volunteer Fire Department is reminding community members that Lake Huron is unpredictable and should not be taken lightly.

Sanilac County Central Dispatch received a call just before 3:20 p.m. on Sunday, September 1, reporting a man was struggling to get to safety in the water outside of the Port Sanilac Harbor. The fire department was dispatched to the scene with the Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office and Sanilac EMS.

Sheriff’s deputies arrived first and found that Department of Natural Resource workers at the launch were attempting to hold the struggling man to the wall, having tossed him a life ring.

Following extensive efforts by all involved, as well as several citizens battling the seven to nine-foot tall waves, the man was pulled from the water and immediately transported to McKenzie Hospital for treatment.

The fire department noted that if it hadn’t been for the quick work by all agencies and helpful citizens, the situation could have ended very differently.
