Where You Choose to Dwell

By Allen Domelle, Old Paths Journal

Psalm 91:1

“He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”

According to the verse above, every person chooses their dwelling. Some choose to dwell in the world, but some choose to dwell in the â€śsecret place of the most High.” However, where you choose to dwell does determine who overshadows you. Choosing where to dwell in life is like choosing a home to purchase. Before you purchase a home, you often look at whether you can afford the home, if the neighborhood that the home is in is safe, and if the home has the benefits you need. My friend, you have a choice to dwell under the shadow of the Almighty, or you can dwell under the shadow of the world’s influence, but there are major differences in the benefits that each delivers. Let me show you the differences of where you choose to dwell.

First, where you choose to dwell determines your trust. According to verse 2, when you choose to dwell under God’s shadow, you choose to trust a God who has never failed. You can trust yourself and the world’s power, or you can dwell under the LORD’s shadow and trust Him to help you and deliver you from all that life will throw at you. You will never fail to find the right way to go in life when you learn to trust the guiding shadow of the LORD.

Second, where you choose to dwell determines your liberty. Verse 3 shows that the LORD will deliver you when you abide under His shadow. You must always remember that the world never gives you the liberty it promises; rather, it only puts you in bondage to sin. You will only find liberty by dwelling under the shadow of the Almighty.

Third, where you choose to dwell determines your confidence. Verse 5 shows that those who dwell under the shadow of the Almighty find that fear flees which results in them living a life of confidence. The only reason a person lives in fear and anxiety is because they lack the confidence that the shadow of the Almighty gives them. You will find that you have no reason to fear when you see the shadow of the Almighty about you.

Fourth, where you choose to dwell determines your accomplishments. Verse 7 shows that the believer will find victory by dwelling under the Almighty’s shadow. Your outlook on obstacles changes to opportunities to use on your way to victory when you dwell under the LORD’s shadow. You will find that victory becomes a way of life when you dwell under the shadow of the Almighty.

Fifth, where you choose to dwell determines your vulnerability. Verse 11 shows that God gives you the protection of His angels who will guard you as you walk along life’s way. When you choose to live life your own way, you have nobody to stop you from doing the wrong things. Trusting the LORD’s shadow always makes you more apt to listen to those whom God places in your life to warn and guide you in life’s way.

Sixth, where you choose to dwell determines your satisfaction. You will never find satisfaction in life in any other place other than under the shadow of the Almighty. Satisfaction is only found in the LORD for He is the fulfillment of every empty part you find in your life. You will never be satisfied in life apart from God. The world’s attractions and possessions always leave you feeling empty; only God can fill the empty and void places of your life.
