“If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.”
When Christ saved you from your sins, He did not save you to continue living in your sins, nor did He save you to continue living the same old life, but He saved you to live the risen life in Him. One of the biggest struggles that believers fight is staying away from the old life. If you are going to serve the LORD successfully, you will only do so by living the risen life. In this chapter, five characteristics are shown about the risen life.
First, the risen life seeks the right pursuits. The verse above says that if you are “risen with Christ, seek those things which are above.” You will never live the risen life with the wrong focus. The proper focus must be on Christ and His desires for your life. You cannot live the risen life in Christ successfully and pursue the things of the world at the same time. You will never enjoy your walk in Christ without having the right pursuits by seeking the things of Christ.
Second, the risen life has the proper passions. Verse 2 says, “Set your affection on things above…” My friend, your thoughts must be occupied by the things of Christ. One of the reasons you must not get yourself so entangled in worldly affairs is because your mind will be occupied by those affairs instead of the things of Christ. You will never be passionate about the things of Christ as long as your mind is focused on earthly possessions and pleasures.
Third, the risen life has the right influences. Verse 3 says, “For ye are dead…” A dead person is not influenced by anyone. You cannot live the risen life and let the influences of the world affect your heart and mind. Every influence you have must be an influence that comes from Christ if you want to live the risen life successfully.
Fourth, the risen life gains security from the right person. Verse 3 says, “…your life is hid with Christ in God.” This is teaching that you must get your security and comfort in life from God. This will only be done by spending time in prayer with Christ. Your mind and heart find the peace and security it needs when you spend time with God who calms the mind and heart. When you find that peace and security that calms you from the troubles of this world, you will find it easy to live the risen life.
Fifth, the risen life has the right hope. The hope for those who live the risen life is that we shall “appear with him in glory.” When your hope is placed in Jesus’ return, you will find it easy to seek the things of Christ and not the things of this earth. The risen life is easily lived when you realize that Jesus may return at any moment.
Let me ask you; are you living the risen life? You cannot live the risen life as long as you live in the world and pursue the worldly affections. My friend, God didn’t save you so that you continue living the worldly life, but He saved you so that you could experience life to its fullest by living the risen life. I know the calls of the world seem intriguing and often will appease the flesh, but will never enjoy the risen life and its blessings by continuing in sin.
The key to living the risen life is to “mortify” the flesh. Every day you must say “No” to the flesh so that you can live the risen life. Living the risen life always results in sweet fellowship with Christ and blessings for doing right.
