“And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the LORD thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth:”
The verse above is the beginning of God’s promises to His people if they will do right. In the first fourteen verses of this chapter, God shows the believer what He will do if they will do right. In verse 2, you will receive blessings if you do right. In verse 7, you will be blessed with victory if you will do right. In verse 8, doing right brings blessings on the work of your hands. In verse 9, doing right gives you a good fellowship with God. In verse 12, doing right opens the treasures of Heaven. In verse 13, doing right puts you in charge. These are all the results of doing right. It is no wonder that the LORD wants His children to do right because He wants to bless them. God would much rather bless His children than to punish them. You can have these things, but you can’t have them without doing right.
However, these verses reveal several things about getting these blessings. First, this verse doesn’t say these blessings will come immediately. You will notice that the verse above says, “And it shall come to pass…” This is a future tense phrase. God doesn’t say that the blessings will be immediate; He just says that the blessings will come. In other words, it would be unwise to quit doing right because you don’t see the immediate blessings of the LORD. My experience has always been that God gives you a small taste of blessings for doing right, then He withholds them to see if you will continue doing right before He sends more blessings. Let me encourage you not to give up on doing right just because you don’t see immediate results. God promises He will send blessings, but He just doesn’t say when those blessings will come.
Second, these verses do say you have to listen to the LORD to get these blessings. The verse above says, “…if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the LORD…” The word “hearken” insinuates two things. It first insinuates that you must listen to God before you can be blessed. The blessings of God will never be discovered if you don’t listen to what the LORD wants you to do. It secondly insinuates that you must heed what He tells you to do. Sadly, many people hear what they are supposed to do, but they heed its warnings. Listening to what is right is not enough to realize God’s blessings, but you must do what you are told to do to get them. If you hear and don’t heed, you will know and never experience what could have been.
Third, God’s blessings don’t come without work. Many people listen and admit what God says is true, but they sit and don’t do what they know is right. Don’t blame God for not blessing you when you won’t do the work it takes to receive His blessings. God’s blessings are as plentiful to the degree that you listen, heed and work. Throughout the Scriptures, it took work for people to experience God’s blessings. God doesn’t give His blessings as an entitlement so the believer can sit, but He gives them as a reward for working His commands.
My friend, God wants to bless you, but you won’t see those blessings if you don’t listen, heed and work. It is up to you how much God will bless you.
