I’m in the Construction Business

By Allen Domelle, Old Paths Journal

Isaiah 58:12

“And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in.”

There are three types of construction: new construction, remodeling, and renovation. I used to work in new construction. There is nothing like taking a blank piece of land and starting from the ground and building a beautiful house. Working in new construction brings satisfaction when the house is built when you look at the handiwork of what you were able to accomplish with a piece of ground.

The remodeling business is a bit different. You are taking a house that has a few problems, and you are fixing the parts of the home that were either broken or not suiting the owner. I have done some of this, and there is also a satisfaction in knowing that you fixed something to help a home last longer.

The renovating business is much different. You are taking an old, rundown house and completely remaking it into something beautiful. I have also done some of this, and there is great joy in looking at the before and after pictures of what the renovated house used to be like before you made what was not useful to being a place in which anyone would want to live.

The work of the LORD is a construction business. In the verse above, God says to “build the old waste places.” Building the lives of people who have no history of living in sin is enjoyable. Most of this type of Christian work is done with the youth. Using God’s Word to construct a young life to reaching God’s greatest potential for their life is not easy, but it is rewarding when you see them being used by God in a great way.

The work of the LORD is also a remodeling business. God says that the believer is to be a “repairer of the breach.” In other words, you are fixing things in people’s lives that have not destroyed them but is hindering them from being who God wants them to be. The remodeling business is simply placing principles in one’s life to keep them from living a life of sin, and continuing to walk in the paths God in which God wants them to walk.

The work of the LORD is also a renovating business. God says that the believer is to be a “restorer of paths to dwell in.” In other words, your job is to restore the fallen back to where God can use them again. Oh, there is so much joy in allowing God to use you to restore the fallen back into a beautiful life that exhibits the power of God’s grace. I would much rather be in the restoration business of restoring the fallen than to be a wrecking ball that destroys a life because of sin.

My friend, everyone is to be in the construction business. The purpose of the believer to be in the construction business is to give hope. You give hope in new construction that God can use them powerfully if they will follow His Word. You keep hope by repairing what will destroy the hope of an individual if they keep walking down the same path. You restore hope in the fallen by letting them see that God can use them again if they will come back to Him. Let me encourage you to get in the construction business of hope; there is no better feeling than to know you have pleased God by giving hope to people.
