“Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,”
Falling in sin is a real threat to every believer. God warns the believer in 1 Corinthians 10:12, “Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.” To think that in your own strength you can keep yourself from falling is nothing other than pride. The verse above makes it clear that God is the only one who can keep us from falling. God’s desire is for the believer to be presented “faultless before the presence of his glory”; therefore, He will do everything in His power to provide a way to keep the believer from succumbing to sin.
The way that God keeps the believer from falling can be accomplished by any person. God’s ways are always set out so that any person can do them, and His recipe to keep the believer from falling is no different. God gives the believer seven things they must do if they want to keep from falling into sin.
First, you must build your faith. Verse 20 says, “…beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith…” The way to build your faith is to study God’s Word. If you are sporadic in your Bible study, you will be erratic in your Christian walk. The Word of God builds you so that you can have a steady step in your Christian walk.
Second, you must pray to keep from falling. Verse 20 continues to say, “…praying in the Holy Ghost,” Prayer is the key to having the strength to overcome temptation. When Jesus faced temptation He prayed; on the other hand, Peter lacked prayer and he yielded to temptation. You can’t live a victorious Christian life without having a daily time in prayer.
Third, you must be filled with the Holy Ghost. You will not walk in the flesh if you are filled with the Holy Ghost. The greatest deterrent to yielding to the flesh is to be filled with the Holy Ghost. You will find as long as you walk in the Spirit that sin’s attraction will be repulsive.
Fourth, you must live for others to keep from falling. Verse 21 says, “Keep yourselves in the love of God…” What is the love of God? The love of God is demonstrated by Jesus leaving Heaven to give of Himself to save mankind from Hell. You can’t be tempted with sin when you are living for others, because temptation for sin only occurs when the believer places their eyes of themselves. If you will live for others, you will find it easy to overcome sin.
Fifth, mercy has a way of keeping the believer from falling. God tells the believer to look “for the mercy of the Lord Jesus Christ.” Looking to restore the fallen instead of condemning them has a way of helping the believer to keep a proper perspective of themselves.
Sixth, being compassionate will help to keep you from falling. You will make a difference in the lives of people when you see their needs and are there to help them. When you’re living to help to meet the needs of others, you won’t have time to fulfill the needs of the flesh.
Seventh, being a soul winner will keep you from falling. If your passion is to pull people “out of the fire,” your flesh won’t have a passion for sin. If the only reason to be a soul winner is to keep you from falling, that is a good enough reason to be a soul winner.
