Going With God

By Allen Domelle, Old Paths Journal

Deuteronomy 20:4

“For the LORD your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.”

Two phrases precede the verse above that explains two very real feelings that many people experience. God told Israel in verse 1, “be not afraid of them…” He continues to say in verse 3, “…let not your hearts faint, fear not, and do not tremble, neither be ye terrified because of them;” Fear is a very real emotion that many people experience; however, fear is the greatest inhibitor that keeps God’s people from living by faith.

Fear is an emotion that is caused by a person wondering about what might happen instead of looking at the God who is with them. God gives the answer to overcoming fear when He says, “For the LORD your God is he that goeth with you…” Notice that you don’t go alone to face whatever you are fearful and afraid of because the LORD is with you. Not only is He with you, but He will fight for you as you go with Him. Let me share a few thoughts that will help you when you face the real feelings of being fearful and afraid.

First, you are not alone. You are not isolated to face life’s situations. When you face the valley of the shadow of death, you are not alone. When you face the surgeon’s scalpel, you are not alone. When you face the uncertainty of what one will do to you tomorrow, you are not alone. When you face the lack of finances to care for your existence tomorrow, you are not alone. Whatever fear that causes you to be afraid and terrified of what is going to happen tomorrow is not something that you are going to have to face alone because the LORD “goeth with you.”

Second, you must go with God if you are going to face your fears successfully. As much as God promised that He “goeth with you,” you must realize that you must go with Him. In other words, God’s direction is forward and moving; it is not going backward or sitting. If you choose to run from your problems, your fears will overwhelm you and bring anxiety into your life because God doesn’t stop going forward just because you decided to run. God doesn’t allow your fears to cause Him to stop going forward in life; instead, He goes forward to get you past that which causes you to fear. If you choose to go forward with God, you will find that He will bring you past that which causes you to be afraid and fearful so that you can enjoy the blessings of victory that are found on the other side of fear.

Third, going with God does not remove what causes the fear in your life, but it eliminates the fear in your heart because you realize that He is greater than what you fear. When you focus on Who is with you, it won’t matter how big or terrifying the obstacles of life that you face are because you know that Who is with you is bigger, stronger, and more powerful than anything that you can face.

My friend, you may be afraid of what tomorrow holds, but never forget that you don’t have to go through it alone. If you look closely, you will find that beside you is the omnipotent God who holds your tomorrow and your next year. Being fearful and afraid does not make you abnormal, but it makes you a normal human; however, being fearful and afraid only means you have taken your eyes off of the God who is with you. Yes, we all know how to put on a good facade when we face our fears, but the facade will vanish with God at your side and will be replaced with confidence and courage because you know He is greater than the cause of your fear.
