Give An Account

By Allen Domelle, Old Paths Journal

Luke 16:2

“And he called him, and said unto him, How is it that I hear this of thee? give an account of thy stewardship; for thou mayest be no longer steward.”

The lord of the unjust steward demanded that he give “an account” of his stewardship. We don’t know exactly what this steward wasted that caused the lord to demand that he give an account; however, this steward was wise enough to do one thing that helped him to save himself once he lost his job. The thing this steward did to save himself was that he kept records of what he had done, and those records are what allowed him to go to those who had debt and work out a debt resolution with them. It was this action that caused Jesus to say about this steward that he had “done wisely.”

Let me remind you that you are a steward in the LORD’s kingdom. Your job as a believer is to tell people how to go to Heaven. One of the things that will show you how well you are doing in soul winning is to keep records of those you have led to Christ. I am always amazed at how people who want to come and present their ministry to my church say that they don’t keep records of how many people they lead to Christ. Yet, when you ask them how many they have personally led to Christ, the only thing they can do is estimate what they think they have done in leading people to Christ. The lack of record-keeping in their soul-winning is what keeps them from being a good soul winner.

My friend, you will never be a good soul winner until you start keeping records of those you lead to Christ. I know that the Pharisees will read this and say that the only reason a person would keep records is because they want to boast about how many people they have led to Christ, but they couldn’t be further from the truth. Let’s be honest with ourselves; the LORD keeps records in Heaven of those who are saved. Your name is written in the Lamb’s Book of Life. If the LORD writes down the names of those who are saved, don’t you think it would be wise for you to write down the names of those you lead to Christ?

Keeping records will help you to follow up on those you lead to Christ. Leading someone to Christ is not the end of the Great Commission; it is just the beginning of many steps when a person gets saved. Your job after a person gets saved is to be sure they come to church and get baptized. After baptism, they need to be taught how to grow in the LORD and become a soul winner themselves. You cannot adequately follow up on people if you have no records of them being saved.

Furthermore, keeping records of people getting saved becomes an excellent motivator to tell you how you are personally doing in your soul winning. You will never know how long it has been since you led someone to Christ if you don’t keep records of those you lead to Christ. Moreover, your records become a source of encouragement that you are doing good when the Devil tries to discourage you about your lack of being a soul winner. Keeping an account or a record of your soul winning will either convict you or encourage you depending upon your soul-winning activities.

Let me ask you, when is the last time you led someone to Christ? You will not be able to answer this question if you don’t keep records of your soul winning. Always remember that keeping an account is not a pride thing; it’s the right thing to do to help you fulfill your duty of being a soul winner.
