By Allen Domelle, Old Paths Journal
“But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”
There is something called the second wind when you are running that kicks in when you get tired. I remember when I was a youth in high school that my track coach would always tell us that we have to keep running until we get our second wind. He would say that once we got the second wind that we would be able to run for a long time. He also reinforced that we would never have the strength to continue running if we quit before we got our second wind.
The verse above is God being the coach of the believer and encouraging them to continue running until they get their second wind. It is easy to start the spiritual race when you are not tired, but those whom God uses the greatest are those who continue to run for Him until they get their second wind. Let me point out several observations about the Scripture above that will help you to continue running for God until you get your second wind.
First, you will become weary when you run for the LORD. You will notice that God talks about running and not being weary. The reason He points this out is because you do become weary when you serve the LORD. There are going to be days when you don’t feel like serving the LORD, but you must continue serving Him in spite of weariness.
Second, you will see others around you quit, but you must keep going. Verse 30 says, “…and the young men shall utterly fall:” There are going to be times when you see others around you quitting, but you must continue running when they quit the race. There will be times when you are running alone because everyone around you quit, but you must take solace in the fact that God is still in the race with you.
Third, when you can’t run, you can always walk. You will notice in the verse above that God says, “…they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” When you’re too tired to run in the spiritual race, you can always walk in it. In other words, you must continue moving forward and never stop no matter how weary and tired you become in the race. You will never get your spiritual second wind by standing still, but you will get it by going forward, even if that means you have to walk to move forward.
Fourth, strength and power comes from weakness. You can’t get strength without first becoming weak. Verse 29 says, “He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.” Strength comes from weakness. If you never get weak, you will never become strong. The believer who sits and does nothing is the believer who never has the strength to defeat Satan. The strongest believers are those who worked until they were weary, but they continued on in spite of their weariness. If you want to gain spiritual strength, you must never stop serving the LORD even though you become weary and weak.
Fifth, continually waiting upon the LORD is where the renewal of strength is discovered. Strength is never gained through rest, but it is gained by continuing to wait upon the LORD and doing what you are supposed to do in spite of being weary. My friend, you may be tired, but let me challenge you to continue doing what you are supposed to do, and you will discover refreshing strength while you run.
