“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”
The verse above makes it clear that the battle the believer fights is not against people, but it is against the rulers of darkness. These rulers of darkness are Satan and his minions. Several actions the believer must take if they are going to defeat the principalities, darkness and spiritual wickedness.
First, it will take action by the believer to defeat darkness. You will notice in the verse above that it says, “For we wrestle…” There is a spiritual battle that you are in, and you will never win it by being spiritually idle. It takes spiritual action for the believer to win. The reason so many believers fall to sin is because they are not active in serving the LORD. I am not saying that the believer who is serving the LORD won’t fall to sin, but I am saying that the believer who is actively serving the LORD has a better chance at overcoming the temptations that come from spiritual darkness.

Second, you must stand with truth if you are going to defeat spiritual darkness. Verse 14 says, “Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth…” What is sad is that many believers are silent while truth is attacked. Truth is attacked in two ways. First, it is attacked through lies. You cannot stand for truth when you are silent when lies are being told. Second, truth is attacked through the propagation of compromise. Standing for truth is a must to defeat darkness from it being defamed and maligned by those who despise truth.
Third, darkness is defeated through righteousness. Righteousness is the act of doing right. There are many believers who can say they don’t do “bad things,” but they can’t tell you what they are doing. You will find yourself living a life of defeat if you keep trying to put away the wrong without replacing the wrong with righteous actions.
Fourth, darkness is defeated by soul winning. Verse 15 tells the believer to have their “feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace…” The person who never goes soul winning is the person who has allowed darkness to defeat them. There are those who say that soul winning is not the answer to everything, but may I remind you that you cannot defeat darkness without being a soul winner. Soul winning is as much a part of the believer’s armor as is standing for truth.
Fifth, darkness is defeated by faith. Doubt feeds darkness as much as faith feeds light. My question for you is this; what are you feeding? If you live your life in doubt, you are allowing darkness to control your life. Stepping out on faith allows you to walk closely with God which defeats the influence of darkness.
Sixth, darkness is defeated with God’s Word. You will never defeat darkness without memorizing and spending time in God’s Word. God’s Word is the sword the believer uses to fight darkness. Trying to fight darkness without spending time in God’s Word daily is like a soldier trying to defeat the enemy without a gun. You need God’s Word to defeat darkness.
Seventh, darkness is defeated by protecting your mind. My friend, keeping your salvation fresh in your mind is a great way to keep darkness from causing your mind to doubt and to be controlled by temptation. You defeat darkness by protecting your mind from the doubts of darkness.
