Characteristics Of A Great Person

By Allen Domelle, Old Paths Journal

Joshua 17:17

“And Joshua spake unto the house of Joseph, even to Ephraim and to Manasseh, saying, Thou art a great people, and hast great power: thou shalt not have one lot only:”

The children of Joseph came to Joshua and asked him in verse 14, “Why hast thou given me but one lot and one portion to inherit, seeing I am a great people…” These people felt that what was given to them was too small, and they believed that they were greater than what was given to them. In the verse above, Joshua acknowledged their greatness, but he didn’t just give them what they wanted, but he made them work to prove their greatness.

One of the things that is needed in churches today are people who not only believe that they are great, but are willing to work to prove their greatness. Let me point out that nobody is great because of themselves, but believers are great because their God is great. The greatness of God should motivate the believer to do a great work for God and to treat every work as a great work. Several characteristics of great people are found in the children of Joseph. Let me share these attributes with you.

First, great people have an incredible vision. The children of Joseph wanted more than what they had. Great people are never satisfied with the status quo because God is not a status quo God. The vision of a great person is great, but they never waver at the vision because they know their God is very capable of helping them to acquire that incredible vision.

Second, great people believe in a great God. The children of Joseph believer God could help them to conquer a mountain that they believed God had given to them. The reason great people believe they are great is because they know the God they serve is great. A great person understands their greatness is not in who they are, but their greatness is in Who they serve. When you realize the greatness of your God is when you will treat everything you do as great, and you will begin to live your life as a great person should live. Serving God demands of the believer to treat their position in Christ as great.

Third, great people are not afraid of work to make great things happen. The children of Joseph understood that it took work to cut the trees and develop the mountain that they wanted, and it will take a lot of work if God is going to do something through you. No person has ever done anything great for God without having to do hard work. It takes hard work for God’s work to be accomplished. You will never see God perform great works through your life if you are only willing to do what is easy and fun.

Fourth, great people are not afraid of battles. The children of Joseph had to conquer the people who lived in the mountains before they could develop their inheritance. If you always run from the battles, you will never see God’s power on display to its fullest extent. The great works of God are not found on the playground, but they are achieved on the battlefield of hard work, faith and truth.

Fifth, great people don’t make excuses to fail, but they find a way to overcome obstacles. The children of Joseph had to overcome the iron chariots, and if God is going to do a great work through you, you are going to have to have an overcoming attitude that looks at obstacles as God’s opportunity to show His power through you.

Pastor Allen Domelle was raised in a preacher’s home. At a young 5 years of age he was saved. Later, at the age of 13, he surrendered his life to full-time Christian service. By the time he was 15 years of age, a position opened up in his church that allowed him to start preaching every week. After graduating from high school, he went to Hyles-Anderson College where he graduated. He later received an honorary doctorate from the Bethel Baptist College in Jacksonville, Arkansas.
Bro. Domelle started traveling as a full-time evangelist in 1990. Throughout the years of being an evangelist, God allowed him to preach in 49 of the 50 states and several foreign countries, see thousands of people saved, and thousands of decisions made by believers in those meetings.
On April 15, 2018, Bro. Domelle took the pastorate at Maranatha Baptist Church in Bethany, Oklahoma. He continues to travel and hold meetings while pastoring a growing church. Bro. Domelle also co-founded the Old Paths Conference which is a Baptist conference that strongly promotes the old-time ways. He has authored several books, and is the founder and editor of the Old Paths Journal.
Bro. Domelle believes that it is everyone’s responsibility to win people to Christ. He personally wins many people to Christ each year. He has also seen several men saved under his ministry who have been called to preach and are now pastoring here in the States or serving as missionaries on foreign fields.
Bro. Domelle and his wife, Sandy, have been happily married since 1994. They have one daughter, Caitlyn.
