Nuclear Waste Dump Site Proposal Near Lake Huron Raises Residents’ Concerns

Great Lakes Environmental Alliance will be holding a meeting Monday, May 15th at the St. Clair County Administration Building in the Donald Dodge Auditorium at 7:00 pm.

Those in attendance will be able to hear via satellite from Diane D’Arrigo, the radioactive Waste Project Director for Nuclear Information and Resource Service (NIRS) in Takoma Park, MD. She has worked with the NIRS since 1986. Her focus on radioactive and radiation issues in the United States and Internationally have blended well with her efforts and experience in analytical chemistry and biological research. She has studied the nuclear issues and fought to ‘deregulate the presence of nuclear waste’ in common products intended to be dumped as trash.

Currently there are two U.S. companies planning to move radioactive ‘materials’ from Canadian Nuclear Reactors through the Blue Water Area and to other communities for purposes known as, “segregation, survey, decontamination, unrestricted release, beneficial re-use, recovery and recycling.” With varying state ‘clearance levels’, it is a concern that some of these materials, “could end up in our recycled metal supply, or in our household goods.” Clearly a debated issue that has been turned down numerous times by many U.S. citizens.

“Come learn how our communities can act to stop this senseless and dangerous scheme.” Great Lakes Environmental Alliance
