Wisconsin football Week 2 opponent suffers major upset loss

Wisconsin football’s Week 2 opponent, the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders, suffered a 20-point home loss to Football Championship Subdivision foe Austin Peay on Saturday.

The final 34-14 tally tells the story of the game. Austin Peay got out to a 21-0 lead before Middle Tennessee first found the scoreboard. That lead was never threatened, as Middle Tennessee never got closer than within 10 points in the second half. The Governors out-gained the Blue Raiders 344 to 153, with a 193-to-109 passing yard advantage and 151-to-44 rushing yard edge.

Middle Tennessee was ranked No. 126 in Billy Connelly’s final SP+ rankings entering the 2025 season. While they were not considered a premier Group of Five contender, a blowout home loss to an FCS opponent should drop the team’s standing even further.

The result is notable, of course, because Middle Tennessee travels to Camp Randall Stadium next Saturday to face the Badgers. Wisconsin will enter the contest 1-0 after an opening triumph over Miami (Ohio), SP+’s No. 92-ranked team entering the season.

If rating metrics and Week 1 results are any indication, Wisconsin shouldn’t have much trouble exiting Week 2 with a comfortable victory.
