Former Wisconsin quarterback Mabrey Mettauer is reentering the NCAA transfer portal, according to 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz.
Mettauer started his career at Wisconsin in 2024, originally joining the program as a four-star recruit, ranked No. 464 overall, No. 31 at his position, and No. 74 in the state of Texas. He committed to play for a Badger offense led at the time by Phil Longo. Of course, Longo was later fired toward the end of the 2024 campaign, prompting a top-down overhaul of the team’s quarterback room, which included Mettauer’s departure.
The signal-caller appeared in three games during his one season as a Badger. He completed his only pass attempt for two yards.
The Woodlands, Texas, native followed Longo to Sam Houston State in 2025, where the air-raid offensive coordinator was hired as head coach. Mettauer appeared in six games during the team’s disappointing two-win 2025 season, completing 59% of his passes for 294 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.
The quarterback is now back in the portal with three years of eligibility remaining.
Separate from Mettauer’s college path, Wisconsin is set for yet another quarterback-room overhaul this offseason. The program is looking for an offensive spark after it finished the 2025 season having scored only 12.8 points per game, ranked No. 135 of 136 Football Bowl Subdivision programs.
The Badgers have had a new starting quarterback to start every season dating back to 2022. The 2026 campaign will be no different; the question now is which veteran fills the role.
Wisconsin has also already seen two players announce their plans to enter the portal: safety Remington Moss and wide receiver Kyan Berry-Johnson. The player movement is only set to pick up as the winter continues.
