According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the milk tanker was traveling eastbound on Highway 33 just outside of Cashton around 3:40 p.m. when the driver failed to negotiate a curve, causing the loaded tanker to leave the roadway and roll over into the ditch.

Rescue efforts lasted over an hour before emergency personnel were able to safely extricate the injured driver, identified as a 22-year-old Florida man. The driver was transported to an area hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries.

The sheriff’s office said the tanker spilled approximately 3,000 gallons of milk and 100 gallons of diesel fuel. Crews at the scene worked to mitigate the liquids from entering a nearby creek.

Due to the road conditions on Wednesday, efforts to pull the milk tanker out of the ditch continued into Thursday. Highway 33 was closed for more than two hours while crews worked on the scene.

Snow-covered roads may have been a factor in the crash.
