The Milwaukee Fire Department made dozens of residents evacuate a three-story apartment building on the city’s east side due to the possibility of structural damage.
“We had some floor columns inside the apartment building and they were concerned that the building was going to collapse,” said Deputy Fire Chief Travis Jones. “We responded to make sure it wasn’t a collapse.”
The department responded to 2515 N. Oakland Ave. near East Bradford Avenue shortly after 4 p.m. on Dec. 4.
Jones said there were no injuries, but officials arranged for several county buses to keep residents warm on a frigid night in Milwaukee.
Jones estimated the building has 24 to 30 units, but he couldn’t give a count of people because everyone wasn’t at home. An American Red Cross spokesperson said the organization hasn’t been called to assist.
A shoring company has addressed the immediate concerns and residents were let back in, Jones said. Now, the Department of Neighborhood Services will investigate the incident. DNS didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment on Dec. 4.
The building is managed by RESCO Apartments and a representative couldn’t immediately be reached.
