Cardinals clearing path at QB for Packers free agent Malik Willis?

The Arizona Cardinals hired a head coach with a perfect point of reference on free agent Malik Willis, and now the franchise is preparing to clear the way for a new era to start at quarterback. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Cardinals have informed quarterback Kyler Murray that the team will release him on the first day of the new league year if a trade with another team isn’t completed.

Could Willis, who will soon be an unrestricted free agent, be next up for coach Mike LaFleur in Arizona?

Releasing Murray will actually cost the Cardinals money on the salary cap in 2026 despite his cap number of over $52 million. Once released, his dead money cap hit will total over $54 million — potentially complicating a path to signing Willis in free agency. Considering he is expected to command a deal in the range of $25-30 million per year, the price could get steep quick for the Cardinals. But it’s an option they’ll be likely to explore.

The Packers backup quarterback made himself into a coveted free agent over the last two seasons under Matt LaFleur, showcasing both his game-breaking athletic ability and improvement as a passer while appearing in 11 games behind Jordan Love since 2024.

The Cardinals, who started Jacoby Brissett for 12 games in 2025, have always looked a logical landing spot for the top available quarterbacks. Hiring Mike LaFleur, Matt’s younger brother, only strengthened the possibility. There is need, and familiarity.

With Murray now out in Arizona, the Cardinals have a decision to make on the future of the game’s most important position. Is Willis, a boom-or-bust free agent who played in a LaFleur offense in Green Bay, the best short-term bet? Or will the Cardinals go a different route, potentially prioritizing a veteran while identifying and developing a quarterback via the draft?

The first step is done. Later this month, we’ll find out if Willis was truly a top option for the Cardinals.
