Aldi is planning to open a new grocery store in Franklin.
The German grocer has submitted a plan to construct a 20,664-square-foot store at 10001 W. Church St. in Franklin, west of Highway 100 and near the existing Speedway gas station. Franklin’s Plan Commission will review the proposal Oct. 23.
The plan includes access to Scepter Drive and a second drive connecting to Highway 100 (South Lovers Lane Road). The existing access to the Speedway on South Lovers Lane would be removed as part of the development at the request of the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, according to city documents. The Wisconsin DOT also requested the new access be across from the existing intersection by the nearby Target store.
Aldi wants to construct 95 parking spaces, which exceeds the maximum allowed in Franklin’s unified development ordinance, but could be allowed with certain provisions. Parking would include four ADA-accessible spaces at the front of the building.
In an Aug. 19 letter to the City of Franklin, Tom Howald, director of real estate at Aldi, announced the grocer’s aim to expand into Franklin. He said the store could operate 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week, and could employ 15 people.
Deliveries would come from the company’s Oak Creek distribution center at a rate of eight to 10 per week, according to the letter.
While acknowledging it was too early to determine the final project construction schedule, Howald said the company’s goal is to open the location in 2026.
City documents indicate staff recommend the Plan Commission approve the site plan on Oct. 23 subject to a number of conditions, including complying with the city’s unified development ordinance and being constructed within one year.
