The Texas high school girls basketball playoffs are here.
Local West Texas, Concho Valley and San Angelo-area teams begin their playoff journeys on Monday, Feb. 16, hoping to reach the Alamodome in San Antonio for the state championship games March 5-7.
Last year, San Saba was the team to advance the furthest from the Standard-Times coverage area, making a trip to the Class 2A Division I state championship.
With the UIL split division postseason format, the path to the state championship will look different than in some previous seasons. With fewer teams in the playoff pool, there will be one fewer round, and most regions will forego their regional tournaments. However, the new format does have plenty of positives, including doubling the number of state champions.
