There are quite a few reasons why people find the Lone Star State an attractive state to live in.
Texas’ healthcare infrastructure, living cost and lack of a state income tax make it the best state for retirees in 2025. Five Texas cities were also recently deemed among the 50 cheapest in the country to retire to.

Nonetheless, the state’s property taxes may give would-be residents pause. While the national average effective rate is around 0.90%, Texas’ average hovers at 1.63%.
Personal finance and business site Kiplinger analyzed property tax bills and home prices to determine the top 10 cheapest Texas counties to live in. Unsurprisingly, rural counties tended to offer more affordable living compared to larger metropolitan areas like Houston, San Antonio and Dallas.
Can you guess which Texas counties offer the cheapest property taxes? Most can be found in West Texas.
