With the Texas Longhorns seeking a March Madness push, they put together a disappointing effort against Arkansas on Wednesday night. Against the Razorbacks, the Longhorns’ defense allowed 105 points. While multiple players struggled, one that stood out was Jordan Pope.
The Longhorns’ senior did not score a point in four minutes of action. In that span, he committed four fouls, prompting coach Sean Miller to give him the early exit. In postgame interviews, Miller did not hold back when asked about Pope’s play.

“He didn’t seem like he really wanted to play,” Miller said. “He really didn’t participate in tonight’s game. So, certainly, when you have a senior who’s that meaningful to your team, and he’s not able to play, it hurts, and it certainly hurt us.”
Although the Longhorns’ regular season is almost over, Pope will have one shot at redemption on Saturday. Texas takes on Oklahoma in its regular-season finale. After how the game went against Arkansas, the California native should be motivated to end the season on a better note.
In 30 games this year, Pope is averaging 12.7 points and 1.9 assists. He has been highly effective from 3-point range, shooting 37%. His ability to make an impact in various ways is why, until Wednesday, he had been an irreplaceable piece of the Longhorns’ rotation.
While the Longhorns should have an easier time against Oklahoma, they will need Pope to stay engaged and avoid fouls. If he can do that, the veteran point guard should be able to put a disappointing performance in the rearview mirror.
