San Angelo scholarship founded to honor heroic veteran

A scholarship fund has been created at the San Angelo Area Foundation honoring Major Gen. Patrick Brady, a Medal of Honor recipient.

The Major General Patrick Brady Medal of Honor–Fort Chadbourne Scholarship was initiated by two anonymous contributions of $10,000, according to a news release.

“We are honored to collaborate with Fort Chadbourne, Pat and friends to unite their shared vision to support students, while honoring the legacy of Major General Patrick Brady,” Matt Lewis, president and CEO of the San Angelo Area Foundation, said in the media release.

The foundation is welcoming donations of any amount to contribute to the scholarship.

“The scholarship will benefit students from the Concho Valley who have a firm understanding of the value of patriotism, exhibit good citizenship, demonstrate service to community and seek to further their education through a trade or vocational school,” the media release said.

Brady spent over 34 years in the Army serving in duty stations all over the world. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for a series of helicopter rescues while serving during the Vietnam War, the media release stated.

“During his two tours, he flew over 2,500 combat missions and helped rescue over 5,000 wounded men, women, and children,” the media release said. “Developing foul weather and tactical techniques for air ambulance rescues, never before executed in combat, Brady has been identified in the Encyclopedia of the Vietnam War and other books as the top helicopter pilot.”

Brady is the only living veteran to hold both the Medal of Honor and the Distinguished Service Cross, the nation’s second highest award.

This scholarship aims to provide support to students entering a trade or technical school.

“I would encourage students to measure success by the strength of their work ethic,” Brady said in the media release. “This type of dedication builds character, fosters responsibility, and will help shape the kind of citizens who will contribute meaningfully to the future security of our nation.”
