Canyon ISD announced Monday evening that offensive coordinator and associate head coach Matt Lovorn will take over as the Eagles’ acting head football coach, effective immediately.
The news comes on the heels of an open week for Canyon. The Eagles are 4-1 on the season and begin District 2-4A Division I play against West Plains on Friday.
Todd Winfrey was hired as Canyon’s head coach in 2021, succeeding longtime coach Blake Bryant after serving as an assistant with the Eagles for 21 years.
Winfrey logged a 36-14 record during his time at the helm in Canyon.
Lovorn joined the Eagles’ staff in 2023 after serving as the head football coach at Stratford. Lovorn, a Canyon alumni, led the Elks to a Class 2A Division II state championship in 2021 and accumulated an 89-22 record in eight years at the helm in Stratford.
CISD didn’t reveal why the change was made, noting the situation is still developing.
“As of Monday, October 6th, Matt Lovorn, the current Associate Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator, will assume the role of Acting Head Coach for the Canyon High School football program. Canyon ISD will not provide further comment at this time as this is an ongoing personnel matter,” CISD said in a press release.
Lovorn’s brother, Kyle Lovorn, was hired as Canyon’s head basketball coach in March.
