Man killed in fiery crash in Irion County

A Ballinger man died in a collision with a Mack rig Thursday in Irion County, the Texas Department of Public Safety said.

The crash happened at 6:38 p.m. Thursday on U.S. Highway 67 near Bryant Lane, the DPS said. Agapito Sanchez Martinez, 67, of Ballinger was driving a 2006 Chevrolet pickup and towed trailer.

Avery Arrendondo, 54, of San Angelo was driving a 2021 Mack tractor and towed semi-trailer, the DPS said.

A Texas Highway Patrol trooper’s preliminary investigation indicates the pickup and towed trailer were traveling westbound on U.S. Highway 67, the DPS said.

For unknown reasons, the pickup drove off the right side of the road, overcorrected and drove into the eastbound lane, the DPS said.

The pickup collided with the Mack tractor and semi-trailer, which was heading eastbound on U.S. Highway 67, the DPS said. As a result of the collision, both vehicles caught fire.

Sanchez Martinez was pronounced dead by Irion County Justice of the Peace Chad Scow, and Arredondo was not injured, the DPS said. Both were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
