During the first month of the college baseball season, the Texas Longhorns have looked unstoppable. They have been led by an explosive offense and a pitching staff that is making headlines. One player who has been key to their success is Sam Cozart. On Monday, the Longhorns’ star was rewarded for his efforts when he was named the SEC Freshman of the Week.
In his latest masterpiece against Houston Christian, Cozart retired 15 of the 16 batters he faced. He started his day by setting down 14 hitters before allowing a hit. The Longhorns’ freshman continued to miss bats, adding six strikeouts to his resume.
While the 2026 campaign is far from over, Cozart is making the most of his opportunities. In his last three outings, the North Carolina native has posted a 1.38 ERA and allowed five hits. Texas has gone undefeated in that stretch and has backed up its talented right-hander with big nights at the plate.
As Cozart has become an irreplaceable piece, he has also joined impressive company. He is the third Longhorns player to win an SEC Weekly honor this year. The other players on that list are Dylan Volantis and Temo Becerra. That list should continue to grow as wins become more valuable.
Although the expectations are higher, Cozart is showing no signs of slowing down. His emergence is coming at the perfect time, as along with Dylan Volantis and Ruger Riojas, the Longhorns have a rotation that can hold its own with anyone in the country.
