Is it a full moon tonight? What is a super moon? How to watch in Texas

Another magical full moon is coming up on Monday, Oct. 6.

The next moon is a full harvest moon, and it will be the first supermoon of three in a row.

The full moon that appears closest to the first day of fall is referred to as the “harvest moon.” In 2025, October’s full Moon takes place approximately one day closer to the fall equinox, which is Sept. 22, than September’s full moon did. This is why October’s full moon will be called the full harvest moon and September’s was referred to as the “Full Corn Moon,” according to the Farmer’s Almanac.

Here is what to know about the full moon in October.

What time is the harvest moon tonight?

The supermoon or harvest moon will rise at 9:48 p.m. MT/10:48 p.m. ET Monday, Oct. 6.

What does a Harvest moon mean?

The name Full Harvest Moon symbolizes the peak timing for fall harvesting of cultivated crops, nuts, and late fruits. Various crops are harvested at different times in different regions, leading to many harvest-related alternative names as well, states the Farmers’ Almanac.

The Apache of the southern plains call October’s full Moon the “Moon When Corn Is Taken In.” The Creek tribe of the Southeast, especially in Alabama and Georgia, uses the name “Big Chestnut Moon” to indicate the harvest season for these tasty nuts. The Celts have a broader name for “Seed Moon” to indicate that different plants have gone to seed during October.

What is a supermoon?

When the moon’s orbit brings it closer to Earth than usual, the cosmic combo is called a supermoon. When this occurs, the moon can appear slightly larger and brighter than usual.

“Different publications use slightly different thresholds for deciding when a full moon is close enough to the Earth to qualify as a supermoon,” NASA says. “Because the orbit of the moon is not a perfect circle, the moon is sometimes closer to the Earth than at other times during its orbit.”

On average, supermoons appear about 7% bigger and about 15% brighter than a typical full moon.
