The management at the newest Flix Brewhouse had a special five-course tasting event Feb. 26 to show that their theater snacks go far beyond the usual popcorn and hot dog fare.
Led by David Meillier, vice president of operations for Flix Brewhouse, the culinary staff brought out dish after dish in their overhauled menu that included everything from cheese curd skewers and house-made hummus to nachos with steak, specialty pizzas, burgers and four core beers plus a few special cocktails.
The menu tasting, starting with the cheese curds (which I’ve sampled plenty in Wisconsin) was quite impressive, with many entrees rivaling your favorite restaurant food.
Here is a sampling of our favorite entrees that you can find at Flix next time you try out this new theater, at either Pellicano Drive in the far East Side or on the West Side at Montecillo. The two former Alamo Drafthouse theaters in El Paso, formerly run by Triple Tap Ventures, along with ones in Lubbock and Katy, Texas, total four acquired theaters by Flix Brewhouse.
Elote Chile Lime Popcorn, Cheese Curd Skewers starters
Flix carries an assorment of popcorn bowls including bacon ranch, dill pickle and Elote Chile Lime.
We got to sample the Elote Chile Lime Popcorn and it’s a huge step above your popular buttered popcorn, even if you add extra butter. The popcorn is infused with real corn and lime flavor that makes it irresistible. You will want to eat every salty bite and then ask for seconds. They do provide a free refill in the flavored popcorn, and it will be closer to regular popcorn than the specialty seasoning.
The Cheese Curds, about four to five on several skewers, were great tasting on their own with a crunchy breading. However, they come with both ranch and a jalapeno jelly on the side that added more bang to the taste buds and fun to eat.
House Hummus Plate and Nacho Business with Steak
Hummus and movie going don’t come to my mind often, but I have to say I do like hummus generally. So, getting a light and healthier snack does sound like a good idea on a movie night.
The hummus is made from scratch and you can really taste the chickpeas and freshly cut up tomato on top. It comes with a colorful array of bell pepper slices and carrots to use as dippers as well as some soft, baked pita bread.
The nachos, however, really made a statement in appearance and taste. They were a wonderfully arranged bed of crisp tortilla chips with cut up carne asada, a Hatch chile queso, fresh pico de gallo and jalapeño slices and good drizzle of sour cream. A really balanced plate, every chip had a bit of everything. One of my favorites for sure.
Pizza Party with Truffle Shuffle and the Butcher
Pizza is definitely a good movie food and the pizzas at The Flix are definitely top notch. My favorite of the two options – meat heavy The Butcher and the Truffle Shuffle – was the latter, a lighter vegetarian pizza that was still filling.
I loved the house made Alfredo sauce with a five-cheese blend that was then topped with mushrooms, sauteed and caramelized onions, crushed red pepper, parsley and truffle oil. The freshly made pizza dough was not too thick and the flavor of the sweet, caramelized onions and the crushed red pepper added depth of flavor.
Korean BBQ Bowl and Bacon Brewhouse Burger
Korean BBQ bowls are the rage right now and Flix gets right in there with the best of them with their offering.
The Korean BBQ bowl is a big bowl with Jasmine rice, packed in with thinly sliced Bulgogi sirloin, kimchi, thinly sliced cucumber, radishes, some cilantro and a fried egg with fire roasted chili sauce. If you like rice bowls, you will want to order this big meal that’s easy to eat in the dark.
The theater also serves more traditional burgers and chicken sandwiches. Both the Bacon Brewhouse Burger and the Fried Chicken Club could give you a hand cramp if you hold onto it too long.
The burger was stacked high with a thick beef patty, cheddar cheese, bacon, a tasty rémoulade, in between brioche buns. Both are served with a generous serving of seasoned fries.
Beers, Strawberry Watermelon Margarita and Expresso Martinis
Flix Brewhouse is known for four core beers, and here’s what to know about them.
The Lucha Libre is a slightly dry hops Mexican lager with a bit of sweet corn finish on it. It’s the most award-winning beer for Flix. It won a Gold medal in the American and International Lager category at the Texas Craft Beer Brewers Cup last week.
The 10 Day Scottish Ale got its name in a funny way. When Flix Brewhouse first opened in El Paso, the brewery wasn’t ready until about 10 days in. So, it seemed a natural name for the first ale. This ale is kind of dark, and malty with some caramel notes on the finish.
The Luna Rosa Raspberry Wheat is a good beer if you don’t like the traditional flavors of beer. It is not overpowering fruity but a traditional wheat beer with clear notes of fresh raspberry fruit.
The Nebulas Hazy IPA is a Citra/Mosaic IPA for the pop lovers out there, Meillier said.
The brewhouse also offers some great cocktails. Of note were the Strawberry Watermelon Margarita, a very refreshing margarita with a strong flavor of sweet watermelon and with a salted rim, and the Espresso Martini, which is a great coffee-flavored cocktail that paired well with some warm chocolate chip cookies and Churro donut holes.
Lunch or dinner with a movie at Flix Brewhouse is a one-stop, great date night for sure.
