El Paso police investigate after man found dead in Lower Valley canal

El Paso police detectives are investigating the death of a young man whose body was found in a dry canal in a Lower Valley neighborhood.

The body of the man, believed to be about 20 years old, was found about 8 a.m. Tuesday, March 3, in a canal that runs behind homes next to the 7500 block of Nimitz Place in the Rosedale area, police spokesman Sgt. Robert Gomez said.

“It’s been deemed suspicious. The cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner and that has not happened yet,” Gomez said Tuesday evening.

The body was located after patrol officers responded to a call from a resident about an “unknown problem,” Gomez said.

It had yet to be determine how long the body had been in the canal, which Gomez said did not have water. The dead person’s name was not available as detectives with the Crimes Against Persons Unit were working on formal identification and notification of family.

Anyone with information on the canal death may call the police nonemergency line at 915-832-4400 or may anonymously call Crime Stoppers of El Paso at 915-566-8477 (TIPS).
