El Paso man killed in police shootout in Upper Valley domestic violence call identified

An El Paso man killed in a police shootout that wounded an officer has been identified as 35-year-old Salvador Valdiviezo, police officials said.

The shooting occurred Sunday afternoon, June 1, when two police officers responded to a call of domestic violence in progress at a home in the 6400 block of Passo Via Street off Borderland Road, Sgt. Robert Gomez, an El Paso police spokesperson, said.

As the officers approached the home, Valdiviezo allegedly fired a handgun at the officers, who both returned fire, hitting Valdiviezo several times, police spokesperson Detective Judy Oviedo wrote in a news release issued Monday.

A female officer was shot and was hospitalized in stable condition at University Medical Center of El Paso. Vadiviezo was transported to a hospital and died of his wounds.

Both officers involved in the shooting have two years with the Police Department. Their names were not disclosed.

El Paso County property records show a house on Passo Via Street was purchased by Salvador Valdiviezo and Tiffanie Y. Valdiviezo in 2022.

El Paso County court records show a person named Salvador Valdiviezo with only one criminal conviction, a 2013 misdemeanor driving while intoxicated case. It is unclear if it is the same man.

As is standard practice, there are three separate investigations ongoing into the officer-involved shooting by the police Crimes Against Persons Unit, the Internal Affairs Shooting Review Team and the Texas Department of Public Safety’s Texas Rangers.

The shooting is the only fatal police officer-involved shooting in El Paso County so far this year.
