Cowboys fans would pretty much unanimously love for the team to come to terms with kicker Brandon Aubrey sooner rather than later, as a delay only increases the chances that talks over his next contract somehow fall apart. One NFL insider has news, though, that should allay some of those fears, with a team source offering reassurances that Aubrey won’t be going anywhere.
With free agency looming, the Cowboys will have decisions to make on defense. Do they go after Trey Hendrickson? They could, since the Bengals let the tag deadline pass without securing his services. But the Maxx Crosby rumor is still floating around; would ponying up for him be enough to make the Cowboys a contender?
Of course, there’s always the draft. While news of Caleb Downs’s supposedly-benign injury could potentially see him drop to No. 12, there’s a new safety who’s suddenly a name to watch. Get to know Dillon Thieneman… and the versatile cornerback out of Clemson who keeps popping up in mock drafts.
Tag season officially ended on Tuesday. Among the headlines are Daniel Jones getting the rarely-used transition tag from the Colts and the Jets making a decision on Breece Hall that only reinforces the Cowboys’ call on Javonte Williams. And the Bengals aren’t the only team to pass on tagging one of their stars; Super Bowl hero Kenneth Walker looks to be out in Seattle, too.
Elsewhere in the league, the Vikings may have an edge rusher (with a Cowboys connection) to sell, the Cardinals are giving up on onetime DFW high school phenom Kyler Murray, and the Bears’ Drew Dalman is hanging up his cleats at just 27 years old. All that, plus the Giants release a top defender who the Cowboys know (and head coach Brian Schottenheimer likes) quite well.
