This year, Veterans Day is on a Tuesday.

The day has been observed in one form or another since 1919, when then-President Woodrow Wilson commemorated the first anniversary of the World War I armistice.

“To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations,” Wilson said at the time.

Congress renamed it from Armistice Day to Veterans Day in 1954. It’s worth noting that this change came into effect after urging by veterans’ service groups to change it from Armistice to Veterans, the Department of Veterans Affairs website said.

When is Veterans Day 2025

Veterans Day will be celebrated on Nov. 11.

Many schools and companies will also be closed Monday in observation of the holiday. Most retail stores and eateries traditionally remain open, often offering discounts for military veterans.

How is Veterans Day different from Memorial Day

Besides being observed in two different months, the set purpose of Veterans Day and Memorial Day is different.

Memorial Day is observed the last Monday of May each year, and is meant to honor all who served and gave their lives for their country. Veterans Day is in November, and honors all veterans, both living and dead, who served in times of war and peace.
