BYESVILLE − Meadowbrook High rolled up their sleeves and turned to a ground-and-pound rushing attack as they welcomed Guernsey County rival Cambridge to Eugene Capers Field for their annual backyard tussle.
That strategy proved effective as the Colts rolled up 380 yards rushing, with senior Brayden Black, junior QB Michael Ray and junior Aiden Farrell each churning out 100 yards on the ground to lead a 46-14 victory on Friday, Sept, 5, 2025.
Black led the way with 130 yards on 14 carries with TD runs of 69 yards and one yard; Farrell added 126 yards on 9 attempts with scoring runs of 53 and one yard.
Ray closed out the Colts’ 100-yard trio with 125 yards on 9 totes with a 1-yard TD run to open the scoring in the first quarter.
In the passing department, Ray connected on 6-of-12 passing attempts for 100 yards, with senior Braylon Lowery hauling in 3 receptions for 53 yards to lead the Colts.
“We were able to establish control on the line of scrimmage tonight and that was the key to the game,” Meadowbrook head coach Steve Norman said. “And that allowed us to really run the ball effectively tonight. And we had three guys really running hard tonight and made it work.”
“We had been struggling in the run game a bit so far,” Norman continued. “We thought if we could win the line of scrimmage, which is of course every Friday. We liked our run scheme and decided to lean on it tonight. And it worked out, so now we will look to build off the momentum of this win.”
Explosive plays jumpstart Colts to first half lead
After falling behind early in dropping to 0-2 to start the season, Meadowbrook flipped that script on Friday with a first half filled with big plays to build a 26-7 lead at the halftime break.
“The first two weeks of the season we were always trying to catch up,” Norman added. “But tonight we were able to get out in front … we had some big plays early. That made a big difference of course, and we were able to push the lead out.”
That potent ground game produced a pair of early touchdowns in the second quarter, with Farrell ripping off a 53-yard sprint to the end zone and Black scoring on a 1-yard run.
Special teams then got in on the fun as the Colts’ Evan Fox blocked a Cambridge punt attempt. Amonti Lofton scooped up the loose football and scampered 25 yards to the end zone for the TD.
Marshall Laishley gives workhorse effort for Bobcats
Cambridge slips to 0-3 on the season, but once again gave a solid effort led by junior Marshall Laishley and sophomore QB A.J. Lawrence.
Laishley carried the rock 26 times to rack up 126 yards on the ground with a one yard touchdown run, while Lawrence hit on 5-of-9 passes for 56 yards including a 34-yard TD pass to Raider King.
“Marshall ran really well tonight,” Cambridge head coach Kevin Gunn said. “And I thought A.J. did a nice job tonight as well.”
Meadowbrook opens up MVL play next Friday with a road trip to Crooksville, while Cambridge will host Brooke at McFarland Stadium. Both sites will feature 7 p.m. kickoffs.
