CANTON ‒ The vehicle involved in a fatal crash on June 15 in Canton Township has been found, the Stark County Sheriff’s Office said.
The hit-and-run crash remained under investigation June 23. A spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Office said no further details, including whether authorities have identified the driver, are available.
“We want to thank everyone who called or emailed with tips regarding this incident,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post.
Authorities announced following the crash that they were looking for a white car and needed help identifying the driver.
Sean R. Gates of Canton, 39, was killed in the crash at approximately 10:40 p.m. in the 1600 block of Shepler Church Avenue SW.
A GoFundMe account has been created to pay for Gates’ final expenses.
Appeal organizer Kathryn Roudebush of East Sparta wrote that Gates, father to four sons, was fatally injured while walking home from work on Father’s Day after an overtime shift for which he had volunteered.
“Sean did not have life insurance and his family obviously (needs) the help,” she wrote. “If anyone is able to pitch in anything it will be very much greatly appreciated. Sean was the type to give the last shirt he had on his back to someone who he thought needed it more. He was all around one of the most loving people I’ve ever met.”
