Richland County prosecutor notifies people of possible scam

Richland County Prosecutor Jodie Schumacher is warning residents of a possible scam.

She said a person received multiple calls, always from a different, non-local number.

“The person on the other end indicated they were with the ‘prosecutor’s office’ and demanded personal identifying information from the concerned citizen,” Schumacher said. “They described the caller as very demanding, persistent and did not sound as if they were local to our area.”

The prosecutor said the woman who received the calls did not reveal any personal information.

“Every time she hung up, they had called back from a different number,” Schumacher said. “She would block it, and they would call from a different number.”

Schumacher said the caller did not specify what prosecutor’s office he represented or provide a name.

“The person did the right thing by calling our office to inquire about the call’s legitimacy and encouraged others to do the same if they experience a similar call,” the prosecutor said. “We will never ask for personally identifying information. We will always identify ourselves by full name and our affiliation with the Richland County Prosecutor’s Office.”

Anyone who might receive a similar call can reach the prosecutor’s office at 419-774-5676.
