Friday, Dec. 5
Boys Basketball
Southeast 57, Field 28
The Pirates ended the first half on a 9-0 run, then scored 23 straight points early in the second to run away with their opener.
Junior Cohen Richardson had seven of Southeast’s nine points to close out the first half, finishing with a game-high 19. Bradley Dillon also finished in double digits with 11 while Devyn Miller (nine points, 10 rebounds) and Joe Sharish (six points, nine rebounds) also excelled for the Pirates (1-0).
Joey Conroy had three 3-pointers to lead the Falcons (0-2).
Roosevelt 46, Stow-Munroe Falls 45
The Rough Riders picked up their first victory over the Bulldogs since the 2014-2015 season. Sevyn Jones had a game-high 20 points for Roosevelt (1-1), including eight fourth-quarter points and a pair of 3-pointers. Gavin Peeps also made a pair of 3-pointers for the Rough Riders to finish with 10 points.
Logan Fleishour (16 points) and Jake Harrington (11) both finished in double figures for the Bulldogs.
Youngstown East 53, Aurora 45
The Greenmen dropped their opener despite having three players finish in double figures. Gui Goedert, Luke Hilditch and Johnny Trivisonno tied for the team lead with 10 points apiece. Alberto Maldonado had a game-high 18 points for the Golden Bears (4-0).
Maplewood 51, Windham 38
The Bombers (0-2, 0-1 Northeastern Athletic Conference) fell in their league opener despite Matt Kolaczek and Keegan Kiser scoring 13 and 11 points, respectively. Ethan Nevinski scored 12 of his game-high 16 points in the second quarter for the Rockets (1-1, 1-0), including a pair of 3-pointers. Maplewood’s David Kern scored seven of his 12 points in the fourth quarter while Andrew Donaldson added two 3-pointers.
Girls Basketball
Crestwood 35, Chagrin Falls 34
Ava Lincoln knocked down the game-winning 3-pointer with six seconds remaining as the Red Devils began conference play in style. Crestwood trailed by nine at the half and eight entering the final quarter before outscoring Chagrin Falls 15-6 over the final eight minutes. Madie Grace Gonczy and Lincoln had five points apiece in the final quarter while Reese Harper finished with a team-high nine points for the Red Devils. Liv Martini, now the program’s all-time leader in steals with 275, had 12 in the win.
Thursday, Dec. 4
Girls Basketball
Southeast 37, Mogadore 34
The Pirates raced to a 14-4 lead, forcing nine turnovers and getting 10 points from Lylia Lavigna in the first quarter. Lavigna finished with a team-high 12 points while junior Jenna Canale (nine points, 12 rebounds) added a critical mid-range jumper to help Southeast (3-0) stay in front late.
Kasey Bolyard scored 10 of her 13 points after halftime and Jessica Holler scored eight of her 13 points in the fourth quarter to lead an impressive Mogadore rally. Holler also had 10 rebounds to record a double-double.
Down 11 in the early seconds of the fourth, the Wildcats (2-1) had a chance to tie it on their final possession.
Ice Hockey
Roosevelt 4, Hudson 3
Down 2-0 after a period, the Rough Riders rallied to win their Adam S. Hamilton Memorial Tournament opener.
Sophomore Avery Stauffer had a goal and two assists while seniors Maxim Ucadze and Carter Stevenson and junior Luke Haney added a goal apiece for Roosevelt (3-3).
Sophomore Jake Typpo made 44 saves.
Wednesday, Dec. 3
Girls Basketball
Roosevelt 48, Revere 31
Up one at the half, the Rough Riders stayed perfect thanks to a 16-2 third quarter.
Claire VanDamme came one rebound shy of a double-double for Roosevelt (4-0, 1-0 Suburban American) with 15 points and nine rebounds. Grace Schoenberger added 10 points, five rebounds and three steals for the Rough Riders, who held a 39-25 edge on the glass.
Rootstown 78, Lake Center 42
The Rovers also stayed undefeated, impressing with 49 first-half points.
Colbie Curall led Rootstown (2-0) in points (17) and steals (nine) and tied with Cloe Bengtson for the team lead in rebounds (seven). Elliott Smallfield also had double-digit points (11) to go with seven steals and six assists. Bailey Kidd, Olivia O’Neill and Eva Tishma added two 3-pointers apiece for the balanced Rovers, who had nine players score at least six points in the victory.
Boys Basketball
Newton Falls 73, Windham 43
The Tigers pulled away thanks to a 40-point second quarter. Phil Davis scored 15 of those second-quarter points, including a pair of 3-pointers, en route to a game-high 29 points.
Matt Kolaczek led Windham with 22 points, 11 in the opening quarter.
Woodridge 65, Field 37
Carter Maxa led a balanced effort for the Bulldogs with a game-high 21 points. John Tyree (14), Blake Williams (11) and Branden Evans (10) also finished in double digits for Woodridge.
Mason Fulst led Field with 15 points, including three 3-pointers.
Monday, Dec. 1
Girls Basketball
Roosevelt 76, Nordonia 37
Claire VanDamme erupted for 30 points in the first half en route to a total of 36, the program’s highest in decades, if not ever. VanDamme was efficient, too, making 15-of-17 shots from the field, including three of four from deep.
Grace Schoenberger (12 points, four assists) and Mahlia Friedman (10 points, eight rebounds) also finished in double figures for the Rough Riders (3-0).
Crestwood 46, Jefferson Area 8
The Red Devils recorded their first win in dominant fashion, holding the Falcons to three points or fewer in all four quarters. Four players scored between eight and 11 points as part of Crestwood’s balanced attack: Ava Macik (11), Ava Lincoln (nine), Reese Harper (eight) and Liv Martini (eight). Harper also had a team-high seven rebounds while Macik impressed with five offensive boards and made four-of-five shots from inside the arc.
Hubbard 41, Garfield 28
The G-Men fell despite 14 points from Mandy Cardinal, nine of which came in the first half with the other five coming in the fourth quarter.
Up 23-20 at the half, the Eagles took firm control thanks to a 9-3 third quarter. Layla Songer had a game-high 15 points for Hubbard while Chloe Cicero did a little bit of everything with 11 points, six assists, four rebounds and three steals.
