Southeast wrestler Damian Kemble advances over state champion

State champion and two-time state placer Spencer Shore of Miami East was beating Kemble 13-2 late. Shore attempted a throw and landed on his head. The junior was knocked out momentarily and the match was obviously stopped due to concussion protocol. Shore has had bad luck before in Columbus. In 2024, he was scratched from the tournament.

Kemble, a freshman, is now in the state semifinals.

“You don’t want to win that way and you do feel for the kid and we told him when we were on the mat that we didn’t want it to go down that way, but it’s one of those things that it’s kind of out of our control,” Pirates coach Shane Kuberry said. “It goes down the way that it goes, and now you’re handed an opportunity to be something and do something really special.”

Kemble next faces Brock Beckler of Waynedale in tonight’s semifinal.

He’ll be joined in the semifinals by his older brother, Dominic, who survived a wild scramble-filled quarterfinal at 138, along with fellow Southeast freshman Gavin Cantera (144) as the Pirates went 3-0 in the Division III quarterfinals.
