Ohio high school wrestling results, Mentor girls district

MENTOR — The first Sunday in March has become the key day for girls wrestlers hoping to reach the state tournament.

The district tournament at Mentor will be the final launching spot for those looking to make the trip to Columbus.

Elyria wins team championship at Mentor district tournament

That’s all from Mentor as Akron Canton sends 10 wrestlers to state.

Here are the final top 10 team scores: 1. Elyria, 132.5; 2. Austintown-Fitch, 102.5; 3. Massillon Perry, 83.5; 4. Maysville, 81.5; 5. Columbia, 68.5; 6. Tusky Valley, 57; 7. (tie) Berea-Midpark, Perry, 56.5.; 9. Steubenville, 56. 10. Brush, 54.

Berea-Midpark’s Deionna Borders wins 235-pound title at Mentor

Deionna Borders closed out the Mentor district tournament the way an undefeated returning stat champion should.

In the 235-pound final vs. Elyria’s Khloee Washinston, Borders got a takedown in the second period and scored the pin in 3:08.

Carrollton’s Riley Alborn wins 190-pound title at Mentor district

Carrollton’s Riley Alborn took care of business in her final with Elyria’s Kira Maassen with a pin in 2:20.

Fitch’s Reghan Koch wins 170-pound title at Mentor district

Austintown-Fitch’s Reghan Koch looked every bit an undefeated wrestler in the 170-pound final. She dispatched Cleveland Heights’ Chelsea Gipson with a pin in 1:16.

Brush’s Brooklyn Baskin wins 155-pound title at Mentor district

Brush’s Brooklyn Baskin put on a show in the 155-pound final. She scored four takedowns and two nearfalls on her way to a 20-3 technical fall over Columbia’s Cailyn Demagall.

Mogadore’s MJ Shellengbarger finished fourth at 155.

Tusky Valley’s Tori Wilson wins 145-pound title at Mentor district

Tusky Valley All-Ohioan Tori Wilson wasted little time in the 145-pound final. She reversed Elyria’s Jaelyn Green onto her back and pinned her in 1:02.

Columbia’s Youstina Hanna wins 140-pound title at Mentor district

In a battle of All-Ohioans, Columbia’s Youstina Hanna won a battle in the 140-pound final.

Facing Perry’s Emma Shephard, Hanna took a 5-0 early lead, only to be thrown on her back. With the score tied, a third-period takedown by Hanna was the difference in an 8-5 win.

Steubenville’s Talea Guntrum wins 135-pound title at Mentor district

Undefeated Talea Guntrum of Steubenville made a statement at 135 in Mentor. In the final, Guntrum needs just 35 seconds to pin United’s Auston Brown and win the crown.

Perry’s Carolyn Geckler wins 130-pound title at Mentor district

The Panthers’ defending state champion just keeps on rolling.

Perry’s Carolyn Geckler pinned her way to her second district title. In the final, she faced Springfield’s Leannah Swiger. Swiger didn’t step back, but Geckler threw Swigert on her back and pinned her in 26 seconds.

In the third-place match, Southeast’s Riley Diehl also scored a pin, sticking Keystone’s Kyriana Grahn in 2:05.

Chippewa’s Kayla Moroschan wins 125-pound title at Mentor district

The 125-pound final at Mentor was another rematch from the Northwest sectional, as Walsh Jesuit’s Ava Sommers faced Chippewa’s Kayla Moroschan. A former state champion, Moroschan continued her winning streak against Sommers with a pin in 1:43.

Maysville’s Audrey Crooks wins 120-pound title at Mentor district

Maysville picked up its second title of the afternoon thanks to sophomore Audrey Crooks. Crooks scored a pin 2:29 over Riverside’s London Davis to take the crown.

Barnesville’s Ladyn Hines wins 115-pound title at Mentor district

The 115-pound final was tight one. A late takedown by Barnesville freshman Ladyn Hines gave her a 4-3 win over Tri-Valley’s Kandice Spry to take the title.

Maysville’s Presley Sandobal wins 110-pound title at Mentor district

Maysville’s Presley Sandobal was dominant in her final against Perry’s Abby Conwell. Sandobal hit two takedowns and a nearfall on her way to a 13-1 win.

In the third-place match, Kent Roosvelt’s Penny Edwards won when Alliance’s Ashlynn Pennington had to default due to injury.

Walsh Jesuit’s Isabella Thiel wins 105-pound title at Mentor district

In rematch from the Northwest sectional final, Walsh Jesuit’s Isabella Thiel clashed with Perry’s Mia Forberg for the 105-pound Mentor title. It was a close match, but a second-period takedown was the difference in a 4-1 win for Thiel.

Shaw’s Aniya Polk wins 100-pound title at Mentor district

In a wild opener to the finals, Shaw’s Aniya Polk outlasted Poland Seminary’s Ella Thomas to score a 24-12 win and remain undefeated this season.

Aurora’s Giulia Zayas finished third with a 11-0 win.

Joy and pain for Mogadore duo at Mentor district tournament

Mogadore’s senior duo experience the full range of emotions as they wrestled next to each other.

At 155 pounds, Mogadore’s MJ Schellenbarger earned her second trip to Columbus via the consolation semifinal. She threw Lakeside’s Isabella Hanna on her back and pinned her in 2:18, earning a state bert after missing last year.

However at 145 pounds, Mogadore’s Kai Gaetjens was overwhelmed by Keystone’s Sage O’Brien in her consolation semifinal. O’Brien scored a 17-1 technical fall, forcing Gaetjens to wrestled for a state alternate possition for the second straight year.

With that, 10 wrestlers from the Akron/Canton area have qualified for state via the Mentor district.

Southeast’s Riley Diehl pins her way to state via Mentor district

After running into a defending state champion in the semifinals, Southeast 130-pounder Riley Diehl had no problem bouncing back.

In her consolation semifinal, Diehl wasted little time with Minerva’s Rachel Weaver, scoring the pin in 35 seconds to book her ticket to Columbus.

Alliance’s Pennington, Roosevelt’s Edwards advance to state via Mentor district

It’s a bit of a family affair in the 110-pound consolation semifinals at Mentor

Alliance’s Ashlynn Pennington overcame some health issues earlier in the week to reach state. In her semifinals, she faced a familiar foe in Minera’s Bailey Hillard and scored an 8-1 win.

On the next mat over, Kent Roosevelt’s Penny Edwards overcame an early deficit vs. Canton South’s Ellie DiFioi and won 9-3.

Both Pennington and Edwards will have company in Columbus, as their brothers each advanced to state yesterday.

Giulia Zayas becomes Aurora’s first girls state wrestling qualifier

Greemen wrestling is headed back to the Columbus and this time its with a female.

Aurora 100-pounder Giulia Zayas won her consolation semifinal match at the Mentor district, getting three takedowns on her way to a 10-3 win over Austintown Fitch’s Madison Galchick.

Finals set for Mentor girls district wrestling

The Akron/Canton area will have six wrestlers going for titles at Mentor. Finals matches are as follows:

Perry’s Emma Shephard earns third trip to state via Mentor district

For the third straight year, Perry’s Emma Shephard is state bound.

Shephard advanced to the Mentor district final and state by scoring a pin in 1:20 over Orange’s Natalie Martincic. Perry goes 3-for-3 in semifinal matches and thus has three state qualifiers.

Perry’s Carolyn Geckler, Springfield’s Leannah Swiger reach final at 130 at Mentor

It will be all Akron/Canton final at 130 pounds at Mentor

Defending state champion Carolyn Geckler needed just 39 seconds to pin Southeast’s Riley Diehl and earn her second trip to Columbus. She will face Springfield’s Leannah Swiger, who earned her second trip to state with an 8-5 win over Keystone’s Kyriana Grahn.

Walsh Jesuit’s Isabella Thiel and Ava Sommers earn first trips to state

Walsh Jesuit’s freshmen phenoms are headed to Columbus

At 105 pounds, Isabella Thiel needed just 35 seconds to pin Shenandoah’s Layken Lively advance to the finals. At 125, Ava Sommers was in a dogfight with East Liverpool’s Paige Cowan, but put her on her back in the third period to win 13-6.

Massillon Perry’s Mia Forberg advances to final to reach state

The Panthers have their first state qualifier from the Mentor district. At 105 pounds, Mia Forberg wasted little time vs. Tusky Valley’s Sara Whitlach, scoring the pin in a 1:34.

Semifinal matches set at Mentor district

Semifinals will begin at approximately 1 p.m.

Nordonia’s Cece Gilliam out of Mentor district tournament

There has been one scratch already from the Mentor district.

Nordonia 135-pounder Cece Gilliam, one of the top seeds at 135, has been scratched from the tournament due to not making weight.

When does the Mentor district start?

Wrestling opens at 10 a.m. and will continue straight through the day. The finals are set for approximately 4:15 p.m.

Who won last season’s Mentor district

Austintown-Fitch won the team title with 115.5 points, and Brush was second with 85 points. Perry (79), Lake County Perry (77) and Berea-Midpark (74.5) rounded out the top five.
