Canton opens warming shelter

Meanwhile, the city of Canton will open a warming shelter Dec. 1 at St. Paul AME Church, 1800 Tuscarawas St. E.

“We owe it our most vulnerable residents to make sure they have a place to keep warm during these winter months,” Mayor William V. Sherer II said in a prepared statement. “I am grateful to all our community partners and donors who have made this venture possible.”

The warming shelter will be open from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. People will be admitted on a first come, first served basis. Space is limited. Food and water available.

The Stark Area Regional Transit Authority will provide transportation to the warming shelter during regular operating hours. Route #107 will take guests to St. Paul AME Church. Individuals can access SARTA from any regular bus stop to the Cornerstone Transit Center on Cherry Avenue.

Riders must tell drivers they are in route to the warming shelter for bus fare to be waived. If transportation is needed when SARTA is not available, call City of Canton dispatch at 330-649-5800.
