MANSFIELD — It’s always a good day when you can bring home championships.
Three Richland County teams did just that last week in high school sports. The Mansfield Christian Flames clinched at least a share of the Mid-Buckeye Conference girls basketball title while Ontario boys and girls swimming earned dominant Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference championships in the pool.
Those were just a few of the highlights from a great week of high school sports last week. Let’s run it all down with this week’s Top Performers List.
Monday, Jan. 12
-Mansfield Christian’s Blayne Morrow led the Flames with 17 points while Josiah Schleusener added 12 in a 44-35 nonconference boys basketball win over Northwestern.
-St. Peter’s Wesley Roberts led the Spartans with 29 points while Markeis Johnson added 18 in a 54-51 nonconference boys basketball win over Buckeye Central.
-Mansfield Christian’s Brooklyn Rider led the Flames with 18 points while Bella Young added 16 and Bailee Nelson had 11 in a 60-39 nonconference girls basketball win over Hillsdale.
Tuesday, Jan. 13
-Madison’s Kaleb Gordon led the Rams with 14 points while Deonte McDaniel added 12 during a 53-33 nonconference boys basketball win over Norwalk.
-Shelby’s Chloe Mahek led the way with 18 points while Braylee Sturts added 14 and Natalie Kennard had 10 in a 59-51 Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference girls basketball win over Pleasant.
-Crestview’s Tori Kidney led the Cougars with 21 points while Danika Kingman added 17 in a 65-38 Firelands Conference girls basketball win over South Central.
Thursday, Jan. 15
-Shelby’s Kayden Paz led the Whippets with 17 points while Landon Foltz added 11 in a 50-37 Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference boys basketball win over Galion.
-Ontario’s Cardae Brown led the Warriors with 22 points while Trindon Flenoury added 20 in a 67-52 Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference boys basketball win over Clear Fork.
-Mansfield Christian’s Zy’Eir Davis led the Flames with 15 points while Brooklyn Rider added 14, Bailee Neslon had 12 and Adelle Cramer scored 10 in a 63-39 nonconference girls basketball win over Mansfield Senior.
Friday, Jan. 16
-St. Peter’s Markeis Johnson led the Spartans with 22 points during a 51-44 Mid-Buckeye Conference boys basketball win over Lucas.
-Mansfield Christian’s Blaine Morrow led the Flames with 15 points during a 48-34 Mid-Buckeye Conference boys basketball win over Crestline.
-Madison’s Justin McCraney led the Rams with 22 points while Deonte McDaniel added 10 during a 51-43 Ohio Cardinal Conference boys basketball win over West Holmes.
-Shelby’s Chloe Mahek led the Whippets with 16 points while Braylee Sturts added 14 and Natalie Kennard had 11 in a 48-38 Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference girls basketball win over River Valley. Mahek also pulled down 12 rebounds and added six steals.
-Clear Fork’s Ava Boccio led the Colts with 27 points while Eliana Pelkey had 17 and Asia Bechtel added 12 in an 80-31 Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference girls basketball win over Marion Harding.
-Crestview’s Tori Kidney led the Cougars with 16 points during a 56-36 Firelands Conference girls basketball win over Monroeville.
Saturday, Jan. 17
-Mansfield Christian’s Bailee Nelson led the Flames with 22 points while Zy’Eir Davis added 17 and Brooklyn Rider had 12 in a 64-36 Mid-Buckeye Conference girls basketball win over Crestline which netted the Flames at least a share of the MBC championship.
-Madison’s Justin McCraney led the Rams with 25 points while Kaleb Gordon added 17 points and 10 rebounds and Deonte McDaniel had 12 points in a 64-60 double-overtime Ohio Cardinal Conference boys basketball win over Lexington.
-Shelby’s Brayden DeVito led the Whippets with 21 points while Landon Foltz added 13 and Michael Shepherd had 11 in a 65-63 Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference boys basketball win over Highland.
-Crestview’s Karter Goon led the Cougars with 19 points while Drew Spoerr added 17, Daniel Wells had 16 and Kaden Kissel scored 11 in a 72-55 Firelands Conference boys basketball win over New London.
-Plymouth’s Izaya Reynolds led the Big Red with 16 points while Jarrett Burrer added 11 in a 53-48 Firelands Conference boys basketball win over South Central.
-Madison’s Morgan Cook led the way with 14 points while Avery O’Brien added 11 in the Rams’ 39-33 Ohio Cardinal Conference girls basketball win over New Philadelphia.
-Madison’s Jaxin Stancombe won the 285-pound championship at the Top Gun Invitational with a 9-3 win over Ripley’s Carter Neal in the title match.
-Plymouth’s Thomas Winegardner won the 120-pound weight class at the Dave Rohr Classic winning his finals match with a 5:52 pin to earn MVP honors of the entire tournament.
-Madison’s Estella Koppert-Smith took second place in the 130-pound weight class at the Top Gun Invitational, one of the best tournaments in the state.
-Madison’s Anna Blanton took runner-up honors in the 190-pound weight class at the Top Gun Invitational.
-Lexington’s Kayla Caldwell won the Ohio Cardinal Conference championship in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:32.02.
-Lexington’s Cooper Watters won the Ohio Cardinal Conference championship in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:01.29, the 500-free win 5:03.31 and was part of the winning 200-yard free relay team with Kenny Konves, Nathan Jackson and Owen Garver which posted a 1:35.17 and the winning 400-free relay with Konves, Peyton McFadden and Garver which clocked a 3:34.67.
-Ontario’s Mirielle Trumpower won the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference championship in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.48, the 500-yard freestyle in 5:21.77 was part of the winning 200-yard medley relay team with Joie Simmering, Ava Zehe and Tessa Crum which posted a 1:53.95 and the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:41.90.
-Ontario’s Tessa Crum won the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference championship in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:05.26, the 100-yard butterfly in 56.76 and was a member of the winning 200-yard medley relay and 200-yard freestyle relay teams.
-Ontario’s Grantham Trumpower won the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference championship in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 21.65, the 100-yard freestyle in 47.35, was part of the winning 200-yard medley relay team with Colten Montgomery, Jackson Swiatek and Jack Rietschlin which posted a 1:40.62 and the 200-yard freestyle relay with Owen Walter, Carson Smith and Montgomery which clocked a 1:30.85.
-Ontario’s Owen Walter won the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference championship in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:53.96 and was a member of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay and 400-yard freestyle relay teams.
-Ontario’s Joie Simmering won the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference championship in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:23.30, the 100-yard breaststroke with a 1:12.64 and was a member of the winning 200-yard medley relay and 200-yard freestyle relay teams.
-Ontario’s Carson Smith won the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference championship in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:02.57, the 100-yard breaststroke with a 1:00.72 and was a member of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team.
-Ontario’s Ava Zehe won the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference championship in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:05.55 and was a member of the winning 200-yard medley relay and 200-yard freestyle relay teams.
-Ontario’s Colton Montgomery won the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference championship in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 53.88, the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 53.68 and was a member of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay team.
-Ontario’s Jack Rietschlin won the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference championship in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:00.83 and was a member of the winning 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay teams.
-Clear Fork’s Raegan Sudol won the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference championship in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:06.65.
-Ontario’s Zoey Shafer, Lily Secrist, Sasha Bulakovski and Tatum Mottayaw won the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference championship in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:58.14.
Sunday, Jan. 18
-Madison’s Chloe Gilbert won the 100-pound weight class at the Orrville Wrestling Girls Invite with a 14-2 win in her only match of the tournament.
-Lexington’s Isabella Ndinga-Mbappe won the 130-pound weight class at the Orrville Wrestling Girls Invite with a 3:47 pin in the championship match of the tournament.
