CLEVELAND — The Guardians continue their search for a consistent offense as they take on the Detroit Tigers July 5 at Progressive Field.
Logan Allen (5-6, 4.27 ERA) takes the mound for Cleveland opposite Casey Mize (8-2, 2.86 ERA).
The Guardians’ loss on July 4 dropped them to fourth in the American League Central race, as they now have plenty of work to get back into the AL playoff picture.
Follow along here for live score updates, analysis and highlights from the Guardians-Tigers game on July 5 at Progressive Field.
Tigers blanking Guardians entering 8th inning
The Guardians have been shut out in four of their last eight games. They were shut out over the final eight innings last night (July 4). And they’re being shut out tonight entering the top of the eighth inning, where the Tigers are still holding onto a 1-0 lead.
There’s been very little for Guardians fans to cheer for this series. Logan Allen had a really nice start, and the Guardians bullpen has been solid. But the offense has been a production desert.
Logan Allen allows just 2 hits through 6 innings; Tigers lead Guardians
While all the focus is on the Guardians’ offense again struggling to gain even one inch, Logan Allen has quietly had a strong night, allowing just two hits through six innings to go with five strikeouts.
Thus far, it’s another case of a quality pitching performance being wasted by an offense that hasn’t come up with the timely hit.
Casey Mize through 4 scoreless innings: Tigers lead Guardians
Tigers starting pitcher Casey Mize held the Guardians without a hit until two outs in the fourth inning, when Jose Ramirez hit a single to right field. Mize has faced only one hitter above the minimum thus far (Brayan Rocchio drew a walk but was thrown out trying to steal second base). He’s struck out three.
Torkelson’s home run remains the difference. He nearly missed another home run but had to settle for a very long single after Steven Kwan deked him in left field.
Guardians, Tigers score: Spencer Torkelson home run gives Detroit the lead
Spencer Torkelson drilled a solo home run, his 20th of the season, to right field off Logan Allen to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the second inning.
The Tigers have been peppering the Guardians with solo home runs this series. And, as has almost constantly been the case during this eight-game losing streak, the Guardians will be playing from behind.
Gleyber Torres injury: Tigers All-Star exits game after collision at second base
Gleyber Torres, who was recently selected as a 2025 AL All-Star, is leaving the game after colliding with shortstop Brayan Rocchio at second base.
Torres was on first base with two outs in the first inning when a ground ball was fielded by Angel Martinez. Martinez flipped the ball with his glove to Rocchio at second base to get the final out, but it also pulled him into Torres as he slid. Rocchio’s arm appeared to hit Torres in his head/neck area.
Torres was down for a few moments before walking off the field. But his day is done. Trey Sweeney is entering the game for Torres.
Below is some pregame information.
Jose Ramirez named AL All-Star starter
Guardians third baseman will be in the starting lineup for the American League in the 2025 All-Star Game. It was his seventh career All-Star selection, one behind Bob Feller for the franchise record.
