Joe Burrow, Bengals falter late in snowy loss to Josh Allen, Bills | Replay

ORCHARD PARK, New York − Playing the Buffalo Bills in a steady Western New York snow and leading for most of the day, Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals melted in a 39-34 loss.

Burrow was intercepted twice on back-to-back offensive plays separated by 14 seconds in the fourth quarter. The first of those saw a short, lofted pass ripped out of the air by Bills’ cornerback Christian Benford, who returned it 63 yards for a touchdown and a 32-28 lead. It was Buffalo’s first lead of the day.

On Cincinnati’s next drive, a Burrow pass was tipped along the line of scrimmage. Bills defensive end A.J. Epenesa came down with the pick, which set up Buffalo for an eventual fourth-down conversion for a touchdown at the 3:03 mark.

After leading by multiple scores for most of the game, the Bengals ended up losing at Highmark Stadium on Dec. 7.

The loss dropped Cincinnati to 4-9, three games behind the first-place Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC North, with just four games left in the regular season. The Bengals plays host to the Baltimore Ravens at 1 p.m. Dec. 14 at Paycor Stadium.

Buffalo improved to 9-4 in the AFC East race.

Burrow finished 25-of-36 for 284 yards and four touchdowns but with two interceptions and a fumble.

Buffalo’s Josh Allen was 22-of-28 throwing with 251 passing yards, 78 rushing yards on nine carries and four total touchdowns (three passing scores and one rushing).

Up until midway through the fourth quarter, Burrow had been enjoying an exemplary day in the tricky weather conditions. He was 22-of-30 with three passing scores and a wide distribution of receivers he’d connected with.

Chase Brown, who rushed for the opening score of the game on Cincinnati’s first drive, also had a TD reception. Burrow also connected with Tee Higgins for two TDs, and he threw one to Mike Gesicki. Higgins finished with six catches for 92 years, and Gesicki had six catches for 86 yards. Ja’Marr Chase finished with just five catches for 44 yards with no touchdowns, but he did hit the 1,000-yard receiving mark for the fifth consecutive season.

It was ultimately Burrow’s two interceptions that undid a day in which Cincinnati held a two-score lead in the fourth quarter and was winning the turnover battle.

Cincinnati looked to have already survived Buffalo’s best shot in the third quarter.

The Bills were driving for their second touchdown of the third quarter against the Bengals and were mere feet from crossing into the end zone. With the ball in James Cook’s hands, Buffalo was about to take the lead for the first time.

Cincinnati’s D.J. Turner knocked the ball loose. It spilled into the Bengals’ end zone where Oren Burks dove on it for a touchback. The Bengals narrowly stayed in front at 21-18.

Then, Cincinnati drove 80 yards on 12 plays with tight end Mike Gesicki hauling in a Burrow pass for a 28-18 lead at the 8:44 mark in the fourth quarter.

The Bills responded with a quick drive that saw Allen run 40 yards to make it a three-point game.

Cook, who came in averaging 102.3 yards a game, finished with 80 yards on 18 carries with a long of 18.

Bills score vs. Bengals | A shocking pick-six turnover by Joe Burrow

Bills 32, Bengals 28 − 5:25, fourth quarter

The Bengals were in the midst of what appeared to be a comfortable drive but Joe Burrow failed to get his lobbed pass to the boundary out of the reach of Buffalo’s Christian Benford, who ripped the ball out of the air and returned it 63 yards for the go-ahead touchdown. Highmark Stadium is rocking and the game just flipped in an instant.

Bills score vs. Bengals | Josh Allen dashes to the end zone

Bengals 28, Bills 25 − 7:33, fourth quarter

This game isn’t close to being over. With the snow picking up again, Bills quarterback Josh Allen ran 40 yards to the end zone to pull his team back within three points.

The run was a historic Bills moment as it marked the longest touchdown run by a quarterback in franchise history (Allen bested his own record of 36 yards).

Bengals score vs. Bills | Cincinnati converts turnover to points

Bengals 28, Bills 18 − 8:44, fourth quarter

The James Cook fumble is looming even larger now. The Bengals converted that turnover into a touchdown when Joe Burrow floated a ball to tight end Mike Gesicki. Ja’Marr Chase was big on the drive with several key plays to help move the sticks.

Cincinnati leading Buffalo to start fourth quarter

Bengals 21, Bills 18

Josh Allen and the Bills’ offense has dominated the second half but Cincinnati is still leading thanks to their last-ditch fumble recovery while backed up against their own end zone on Buffalo’s most recent drive. Cincinnati’s offense could really use a scoring drive.

Bengals force a much-needed stop, narrowly avoid Bills taking lead

Bengals 21, Bills 18 − 00:46, third quarter

Buffalo was in the midst of what looked to be a long, back-breaking drive to take the lead on Cincinnati until D.J. Turner popped the ball away from Bills running back James Cook, who fumbled the ball mere yards away from a go-ahead touchdown. Cincinnati’s Oren Burks recovered the ball in his own end zone for a touchback. The Bengals’ lead lives on for now.

Bills score vs. Bengals | Bills inch closer to Cincinnati

Bengals 21, Bills 18 − 9:20, third quarter

The Buffalo Bills started the second half in ideal fashion, traveling 75 yards on nine plays. Josh Allen hit Dalton Kincaid on a five-yard touchdown pass for the score. B.J. Hill sacked Josh Allen on the first play of the half from scrimmage and Buffalo was way off-schedule on the drive. A pass interference penalty on Cincinnati’s D.J. Turner kept the Bills moving, and they kept moving all the way to the end zone.

Halftime | Bengals have a 10-point halftime lead at Highmark Stadium

Bengals 21, Bills 11 − Halftime

The Bengals forced a Bills turnover on downs near midfield with just over a minute remaining in the half but couldn’t do anything on their ensuing possession. Buffalo got the ball back with 10 seconds until halftime and ran out the clock to get to the break. Josh Allen and Co. will receive the opening kickoff of the second half and look to eat into their deficit.

Joe Burrow was 13-for-18 in the first half. Allen was 9-for-13. The difference in the game appears to be Cincinnati’s success on third down (7-for-8). The Bills are 1-for-5 on third down, although they’ve converted two fourth-down tries on three attempts.

Chase Brown has a rushing and a receiving touchdown for Cincinnati, and Tee Higgins had an acrobatic catch for a score.

Buffalo has successfully limited Ja’Marr Chase (one catch, 13 yards).

Bengals score vs. Bills | Hosts can’t get off the field vs. Joe Burrow

Bengals 21, Bills 11 − 3:18, second quarter

Joe Burrow (12-for-15, two touchdowns and 119 yards) placed the ball perfectly in the front-right corner of the Buffalo end zone, and Chase Brown hauled the ball in for the score. Cincinnati had to challenge the ruling of a catch short of the goal line to get the score, but the challenge was successful.

Bills score vs. Bengals | Circus play by Josh Allen leads to score

Bengals 14, Bills 11 − 7:27, second quarter

The Bills’ scoring drive was capped with a classic Josh Allen moment as he scrambled, bought himself some time and then threaded a needle to Khalil Shakir in the back of the end zone. Due to a roughing-the-passer penalty on Cincinnati, Buffalo opted to go for a two-point conversion, and Allen completed a pass to Dawson Knox.

An important note on that drive: The Bengals’ defensive backs covered their assignments well, but Allen was able to scramble and turn ad-lib plays into positive yardage when Cincinnati’s defensive front failed to sack him. Allen had too much time to do what he does best, and it hurt the Bengals.

Bengals score vs. Bills | Tee Higgins toe-tap pads lead

Bengals 14, Bills 3 − 13:33, second quarter

The Bengals offense is steamrolling through the elements and the Bills so far today. The latest scoring drive was a six-play, 55-yard campaign that took 3:21 and ended with a Joe Burrow lofted pass and a toe-tap along the sideline in the end zone on a 21-yard Tee Higgins reception.

Joe Burrow is 9-for-10 for 95 yards so far in the game.

Bills score vs. Bengals | Bills leave points on the field, settle for field goal

Bengals 7, Bills 3 − 1:54, first quarter

Buffalo running back Ty Johnson had a clear lane to the end zone when he slipped on the snowy surface, fell, and slid down to conclude his 23-yard run. He went down untouched, and that’s what playing in Orchard Park, New York looks like today. The Bills ended up settling for a field goal from 26 yards out. Matt Prater’s kick into the wind was successful.

Bengals score vs. Bills | Bengals score on impressive opening drive

Bengals 7, Bills 0 − 6:44, first quarter

Cincinnati capped a 14-play, 67-yard drive that last 8:16 with a five-yard touchdown run by Chase Brown. Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow went 6-for-7 for 47 yards and Cincinnati converted all four of the third-down situations it faced.

‘How ’bout this weather? Let’s play some football’

Referee Brad Rogers greeted the teams’ captain at midfield with that address, and it was very fitting as the teams will begin today’s game on a field that will need to be cleaned up throughout the 60 minutes due to steady snow.

The Bengals get the ball to begin the game.
