Earlier this year, Pizza Hut started offering its take on the charcuterie board – complete with an ad campaign starring former New England Patriot Rob Gronkowski. Dubbed “pizza charcuterie,” it includes two medium pizzas, eight boneless wings and breadsticks with dip. That was the moment I realized the charcuterie trend had jumped the shark.
The more fashionable these French sharables have become at local restaurants, the less they’ve caught my eye while scanning over menus. That was until two weeks ago when I visited a new deli in Dayton, Kentucky.
At Rump & Roll Delicatessen, owner Tavis Rockwell offers a charcuterie sandwich ($15) that hits all the right notes. Rockwell stacks rich pate, salami, tender coppa, rustic country ham, Port-Salut (a creamy French cow’s milk cheese) and chopped pickled vegetables on an artisanal Sixteen Bricks baguette slathered with house-made pepper jelly and whole grain mustard. The result is a humble deli sandwich with a touch of upscale restaurant elegance.
